Can you use online poker to get better at live low limit? Can you use online poker to get better at live low limit?

Hey there. Newbie on this forum, I hope it's not a redudant question. Here is the situation. I've played live low limit for a while(nl holdem cash games).
And at the same time I kinda know little about online poker, only that it's different. I want live to be my primary focus. At the same time, it's hard to ignore the flexibility of time&location offered by online poker. So can online poker be used to improve my live game? In which way? or would it just create bad counterproductive habits?

Thanks.

The fact you can track hands and situations alone, should be very helpful in analyzing large amounts of data to plug leaks.

Will this help you in live poker? To a degree.

If you want to get good at live poker, play live poker. If you want to get good at poker overall, play as much and study as much as you can. Whether that's online or live.

I used online to learn to play mixed games since the stakes are so low on some sites, you can really get a lot of hands to analyze in a short period compared to such an expensive lesson playing live.

It will if you know how to adjust from online to live. There will be many more multiway pots live, you need to raise a lot bigger (open raise 5bb or raise 5bb + 1bb per limper), and there will be many WTF moments where you'll never put someone on 74s but yes they limp called a $18 raise with that.

If you start stacking off JJ for 100bb like you can in a lot of online games, you will get rekt.

You can stack off JJ but only to certain players who are very loose.

You will see nits fold KK pre - i've seen it happen before. So don't stack off light to players like that.

Well position dependent of course. Like CO vs BTN or SB vs BB. Obviously not so much EP vs BTN.

Yes. Playing in certain situation for fractions of live games will get you more experience for when you play live games. I play a lot online and not as much live, I feel my game has gotten better and better the more I play online.

Common adjustments to live are by value betting wider and folding some situations that you would stack off online (like I've folded QQ to a 3! Live without much thought but very rarely would online)

This is by far the biggest advantage. You'll learn what situations and hands are losers that you probably didn't even realize (playing pocket pairs only to set mine is unprofitable at most online levels). It doesn't mean it isn't profitable live, but it should cause you to think about what has to be different to be profitable. If you can't identify the circumstances, you should assume what is unprofitable online is also unprofitable live.

Absolutely. Online players are generally better than live players. What I mean by that is if you take two players w/ the same potential who have never played poker, have one play live for a year, one online for a year, after a year, the online player will be better in both online and live games. It's because online you play so many more hands in the same amount of time.

I use really low stakes online games to blow off steam or get through downswings. It's a lot better for your roll to blow off 100 bb at .02/.05 then 1/3 or 2/5. And sometimes I'll run well enough online that it gives me some confidence back at live games when my hands aren't holding and I'm getting really MUBsy.

Honestly it's a great place to just try different moves/styles since the worst that can happen is you lose like $5.

Ha. This is punchline now given the idiom itself is the expected answer.
