BB usually plays higher stakes. I think he is a decent player but seems to be splashing around and playing agro

doesn't know hero. hero is 30ish WG who hasn't been playing many hands

$500 effective stacks

hero raises middle position to $15 with AT only BB calls

flop ($31)is
A46

check check

turn ($31) is 9

check, hero bets $20 BB makes it $60, hero calls

river is K ($151)
BB bets $140

Hmm strange one. The Kc actually makes this a really interesting decision because on the turn we can put a lot of V's on a semi bluff with the Kc but since that card hit the river all of those go out the window.

I don't mind mixing in flop checks with weaker aces. Its hard to get a FD in HU pots so there is nothing wrong with this line.

I don't see pretty much anyone semi bluffing with the 2nd nut flush draw (QcXx) on a 3 flush board, even someone super aggro/splashy. I think V would also lead out with a small/medium flush on the turn instead of x/r unless you take the check flop > bet turn line a lot.

It feels like V thinks you are weak here and is just trying to blow you off your hand. His line doesn't really make sense and that Kc was the worst card in the deck for him to keep bluffing and he did anyway. You got a strong hand here that is hard to beat especially HU. I say its a pretty trivial call and your flop check caused this guy to spazz. Wp assuming you called river.

calling looks standard, you're reasonably high up in your range
would've been much closer to a fold on Jc river

We don't need to bet the flop. If our strategy is that we're going to trap the villain into bluffing at the pot with air, then we need to follow through with it. That means checking the turn as well. Betting the turn is a mistake.

Much of the time we want to play this straight forward against a higher stakes player who is likely better than we are. Bet the flop.

You under represented your hand so it's possible that made him frisky.

Seems possible he has a low flush that he does not want to be pushed off of, but the size of the bet is pretty confident.

Sometimes lesser players over value hands like 9c8c here.

You need to be good roughly 30% of the time.

Without better info about his skill and your observation that he's splashy, ya maybe look him up but it's grim.

i'd mostly bet flop but x is ok too.

turn is a call vs a higher stakes dude who can be messing around.

river i'd call the Kc, if it were a smaller club i might fold. Kc takes out a lot of his value range

I fold preflop and think this is too early to be getting out-of-line with a weak hand (seriously, ATo is a very weak hand). Having said that, our raise managed to get this HU in position with initiative, so if that was the expected result (???), whatever.

I'm fine with checking back the flop against an aggro players as I don't want to risk being uncomfortably check/raised, my primary goal is to showdown for the pot, plus we give him bluffing rope.

Think I might be cooler with a turn check/back for the same reasons on this card. Our hand has become a lot weaker, so getting in just one bet postflop on the river (either as a value bet or bluffcatcher) against a decent aggro player would be fine with me. We didn't really want 3 postflop bets to go in, and yet that is now the spot we've put ourselves in.

If he's aggro and splashing around I guess we have to lean to calling the river. The sizing is suggesting "please fold" and not "please pay me off".
