Hero $450 1/3 live

Hero has been a little aggressive raising a lot pre. Sort of new to the table but getting a lot of playable hands.

Hero AJss in BB

Folds to sb who looks over at me then completes (thought he was going to ask to chop), hero raise to $13, sb looks visibly annoyed and says "really man?!" Then shoves for $100. Do we just fold?

No reads. He hasnt played much since I sat down. Middle aged black man. Def a rec player

Dead Card Theory.

Snap call. Your AJs goes up in value when you are in the blinds and people have folded to you. This is because most people play Ax hands and it is very likely every Ace is still in the deck.

So you may actually be a favorite vs his likely underpair.

You’re really high in your range and he only has 33 BB. This is the kind of hand I always wish I had when they jam on my Q7s here.

I don’t care about his Hollywooding. I’m not about to fold a nutted hand.

Well, if you believe in tells at all...

This is 101 level stuff. People will try to make you think their action is predicated on something other than what it is really predicated on. Usually, any reason other than the strength of their hand. In this case, he says "really man?" after you raise. He is suggesting that he is now reraising out of anger due to your raise. Not because he has a good hand.

Why would he want you to think that?

Moreover, why didn't he chop?

Having not chopped, why would he be so upset that you raised? He chose not to chop. It is perfectly reasonable for you to raise a good hand. It's not as if you were the SB and raised rather than chop.

I don't think I've ever seen a non-chopper get mad that someone raised them. It's contrary to their nature, really. They are not chopping cuz they wanna gamble. Who TF would refuse to chop just to check it down (apart from jackpot situations)?

If you want to believe that 1) he just happens to be a non-chopping middle aged rec. 2) He was irrationally angry when you raised. 3) He openly communicated this to you in earnest. 4) His response to this is to light at least $100 on fire, having every reason to think you have a strong hand and having communicated to you that he is spewing...

OK then, just do what ever the computer says you should. Which will obvioulsy be to go with the hand.

Extra, disregard if it bothers you obv. I would stereotype black players as being a little more likely to be verbally tricky and a little less inclined to create some high risk, gambly situation like going nuts with a weak hand in a blind on blind pissing contest.

The look over to you + the speech = the nuts. Fold. Whatever he shows you when you fold, let him know he had you beat, even if it is 72o. "You had me dominated."

Really nice post.

I'm an online player transitioning to live and live tells are something I am admittedly deficient at.

I think you are correct and this should be a fold after initially think it was a snap call.

To OP - can we get results?

Agreed.

Anger plus speech equals strength.

Thanks bud. I'm more or less the opposite. An exploiter trying to learn better fundamental poker, so I've found your posts very helpful. Glad to return the favor a tiny bit.

Is there a BBJ in play? If there is, completing the SB is sometimes a method of indicating you have a BBJ hand and would like to check it down to the river (getting in the appropriate amount required on the river if hitting a BBJ hand). I would probably do my best to confirm this is what is going on first (and likely check it down with him), and otherwise as played we've most likely just ran into a monster and should fold.

yeah recs are generally decently strong here but I think you still have to call here, he'd have to only jam JJ+ AK for you to fold and you see plenty of recs spaz with QxJx or 66 here so call and ride the variance train

Also the correct speech, play (if you normally are a chopper) is after he says "really?" is "oh my bad, chop then?" if it's a BBJ type hand, and he wants to play for the BBJ, he will generally check in the dark (to indicate he wants to check it down) and when he has a monster and wants to play will stay silent

I've seen way too much random nonsens from unknown recs to ever fold this for a mere 33bb. I shrug and call.

Has he asked to chop in the past? I think $13 was too much anyway, should go smaller since he's probably bad postflop. Jamming on you after a speech is the most +ev way he could play this, it beats playing a trash range oop.

No there had been no chops at the table before this

To the person who wanted the results I'll post it later if I called or fold. Wouldnt mind a little more analysis

It comes down to a live read for me, the more scripted and cool/swaggy he is acting the more I fold.

The live read can be transformed into math/range analysis. If you think 100% it's AA, then pot odds don't justify a call (at one extreme). The other extreme is a pure bluff (100% ATC), which is an easy call. The challenge of course is what V's actual range is and whether we have direct pot odds to call. For example, if V's range has AJ as the average holding, then it's a call. If it's weighted more heavily to hands stronger than AJ, it's a fold.

My personal hunch is that he's strong here, so I'd fold. And even if he's semi-strong, we may just be flipping at best, which isn't a good spot.

Yeah. While I do agree with the other poster that there does tend to be a lot of random nonsense at these stakes, these speeches combined with a big bet is way too heavily weighted towards strength.

When someone refuses to chop its 99% because they looked at their hand before the action was on them. Its always a huge hand in this spot and ES2 broke down the rest really good. Im surprised he didnt have QQ/KK.
