Open limping can be OK in specific situations but generally you should raise or fold. Limping behind is more common, low stakes live villains will often lose a lot of money with one pair so you can limp behind with speculative hands. Another reason why is because raise sizes are so different then online. Live raising is usually more like 5BB + 1BB per limper but varies widely depending on table conditions. Raises out of the blinds are often ridiculous sizes like 10BB but will still get called because people think you are squeezing.
3 bets are usually around 3 times the first raise. A bit less if the first raise was big and there isn't anybody else in the pot, a bit more if villain is sticky or there is a lot of money in the pot already.
As for playing deep, it does change things a lot. Play becomes more about good post flop play then about preflop moves. Adjusting to the situation and the specific opponent then having a well balanced mechanical range.
