My friend is 20 years old and told me he wants to get into poker. I’ll help him of course, but I want to link him to some videos and articles for a complete cash game newcomer. Does anyone have some materials for someone who hs never played before in preparation for his 21st bday?
The most important things for me in learning the game has been:
(1) Focusing on memorizing hands as accurately as possible.
This includes position and chip stacks.
This is very tough for beginners so don't ask him to memorize every hand at the table. Just the ones where he put money in. After each of those hands, he should immediately try to recreate the hand to practice this skill. He should write down what he remembered about the hand in his smartphone.
This is skill is very important because it allows you to analyze hands away from the table, which is huge for getting better.
(2) Posting my hands here for analysis.
I started doing this in January of this year. I've gotten a lot of great responses, which has helped my game a ton.
Step one: play money games.
Step two: when those start feeling silly, read a basic book, like poker for dummies
