2/5 with ~700 stacks

-Folds to Hero who completes the straddle for 10 with 5

-Straddle makes it 35, Hero calls (Villain is a young eastern european guy..I've only been at the table for about half an hour and he's played solid. Nothing crazy and he hasn't been to showdown yet so I don't have too much info).

Flop (72): J

-Hero checks
-Villain bets 40, Hero calls

Turn (152): 3

-Hero checks
-Villain bets 90, Hero calls

River (332): K

-Hero checks
-Villain bets 225
-Hero?

I would expect him to check back most hands without a J here. Maybe going for thin value with AA or AK? KK is possible of course.. or pure bluffs.

What do you guys think? Cheers

Raise pre. As played, fold turn. AP, never call river. Fold is generally best. You should have no Js in your range after checking 3 times, so I doubt you get a lot of folds if you raise, even from "bluffs" that beat you.

Raise your straddle with 55.

I might bet somewhere. Probably turn, but I don't think I'd fold turn.

As played, it's really tempting to call river. Why is he betting so much? Maybe he does have a J and hopes you have a K. Or maybe he hit a set and hopes you have a J? Otherwise, the big bet looks kind of bluffy.

In game I think I'd fold, though, w/o better reads.

No need to raise here, but I would have bet the flop. You probably had the best hand, but you can't be sure when you check and he bets. Just bet the flop and the turn. If villain raises flop, call, and fold to further aggression. He can be raising with any 2 cards thinking you are making a play, but once you call his raise, he should understand you have something and slow down.

Why do you want to raise a random hand? When he calls, he calls with a better than random hand. When he checks, he checks with all his garbage. Why not keep his range wide? A wide range is especially unlikely to hit this flop, but a pf caller is more likely to have a J.

Because If love to take it down pre OOP with 5s, but if he calls, we should also win a decent pot when we c-bet and he misses. Initiative doesn't suck, especially OOP.
