Playing in a friendly home game amongst friends at 1/1 stakes.

Button is pretty tight and seldom makes moves with nothing. I note that he folds to most cbets in preflop raised pots unless he makes top pair or a draw or something of the sort.

I start the hand with about 140. Straddle is on for 3, and I have AQhh in UTG+1. Decide to call and possibly take a multiway pot. Folds to button who raises to 11. Straddle calls and I flat as well.

Flop is AKQ rainbow, no hearts.

Straddle leads out for 15. I decide to raise to 43 to see where I am at. Button then proceeds to shove all in (covers me). Straddle folds.

I ???

Open raise pre. Fold flop. I can’t think of a hand in his value range as the preflop raiser that you beat. AA KK QQ AK (AQ) all likely candidates. JT is unlikely but possible. You limp/called so you are actually the one who is most likely to have JT but he’s raising AI anyway, so I put him on mainly sets and JT. I’m assuming he had you covered?

Also, useful to know what kind of player V is. Would he do this with KQ? (Is he that bad?)

I would say villain plays pretty passively and doesn't tend to check raise or bet draws often. Only times I've seen him 3bet preflop is with large pairs or AK, which is why I folded after 10s or so. Didn't think I was beating anything

Raise pre, don't raise to find out where you are at, fold is good IMO.

Yeah.

You're raising for the wrong reasons here.

So I was chatting with a friend who was sitting next to V on this hand and had taken a peek at V's holdings. Said he had pocket 10s. Weird line to take, but I guess I am still happy with my fold.

It’s so funny to read posts like this. I totally agree.

I recently started rewatching High Stakes Poker on YouTube. I can’t tell you how many times Gabe says that someone should ‘raise to find out where he is at’ and even says that’s how the old school players like Doyle play.

I raise for value. Or as a bluff. If I don’t know where I am at I call and evaluate or fold.
