Weird spot in a live game.

Opponent is playing tight relative to the Normal loose-passive players at the table. Didn't seem very aggressive either but not limping in too much.

$1/2 blinds.

BTN has $70 stack.

Folds to BTN who opens for $10 (normal open was $10-15 this night).

I'm in the SB with AQcc. I 3bet to $35. In retrospect I'm wondering if 25-30 might be been better considering his stack size, but also like my chances of getting a lot of worse hands to call at this size anyways.

He calls.

Flop 742 all spades.

Hero?

I think pre is just a call or jam. Stacks are way too shallow and a 3bet is essentially committing anyways.

Against short stacks I am only really comfortable calling off QQ+ and AK. That being said, I won't be ecstatic about it but JJ and TT are also occasionally a call.

If we cannot call off with AQs and JJ-TT maybe 99, we can use these as fold equity hands. If we Jam 68 effective into 13, villain is calling 60 into 81 so we have decent amount of fold equity.

As played, I think this is a xf, flop is horrible for our range and any over pair with s is probably calling us.

Keen to hear other opinions, feels like a super awkward spot.

Pre is never a call and depending on your effective stack with the BB you should just be jamming, ie if your effective with BB is <100bb you should jam. It's not like you have a 3bet to 35 and fold range.

As played jam flop

I like the breakdown preflop of if we 3bet we should be jamming. Seems correct, guess if he had 90+ it would be a bit of a stretch to only call or jam.

I think on the flop you say any overpair will call me, but I don't think reasonable opponents have JJ+ in their range, and they are only flatting maybe 88+. I think his flat range pre is composed of a lot of overcards at this point. But then it's kind of a strange spot since my bet could be equity denial vs hands like kt, value vs one spade+overs (though we are 50/50 in that case), or rare bluff if he scares off with AK no spade.

So let's say bb has a $200 stack and we cover. What's your 3bet size here? $50? $70? I think putting $200 at risk vs bb with AQs just cause the btn has an awkward stack size isn't quite right.

Well it isn't really a huge risk because what is the actual likelihood of BB showing up with a premium? Pretty small. And actually if you raise to $50 say and BB decides that you are squeezing, you have a hand with pretty good equity to fall back on. One other thing to remember is that given the BTN is a shorty, the BB will not bluff raise you in this spot that often because it is likely the shorty will call all in, so he would need to be really strong to raise you as he would have very litte FE vs both opponents.

So you think the optimal play here is to 3bet to 50-70? Agree with your logic that the bb (especially these passive casino types) will not bluff raise me.
