It came to my attention yesterday that I was opening too wide from early position. I had said that I was opening 98s with my standard 7.5x open at 1/2 and it was pointed out that this was a losing play, since the call range was so far ahead of 98s when I open for such a large size.

People are calling stations at my local casino, especially pre-flop so I don't want to change my standard open size too much. I normally go for 6x-7.5x but sometimes go for 5x if that gets me heads up.

Anyway, I had been previously opening 88+, 98s+, J9s+, all suited broadways, AQo, and A5s. That range would widen to include AJo, KQo, and 77 when I was getting a lot of respect at the table.

Is suited broadways, 88+, and AQo a good UTG/EP open range for a 6x-7.5x standard sizing? Would it be good to even remove maybe QTs out of my open range? Or maybe this range is too tight and I could profit from keeping T9s and A5s in there?

Quibble: The call range being ahead of 98s is only half the problem. The other half is that you lose 7.5bb everytime you get 3bet, which will be 15%+ of the time. These two halves taken together are what causes the open to lose money. You should also lose 7.5bb every time you get 3b holding TT, but that's an OK 7.5x open since you can make up for the loss using your equity advantage when you get called.

How deep the game plays also matters here. If you're playing 700bb deep, opening all suited connectors UTG for 7.5x should be fine. In fact, you need to have hands like those in your range this deep because you need to have monsters on low boards, otherwise you will get owned by people who understand your high card heavy range.

With 60bb stacks, it's not possible to own you since you're never folding overpair QQ+ on low boards if you raised 7.5x pre.

Very true, I buy in for 300(150BB) and I usually rebuy back up to 300 anytime I'm down to 200 in a session. I'll add my normal stack depth to the main post as well.

When I'm deep I definitely feel comfortable playing a wider, balenced range and using my table image to be very aggro pre and postflop.

Looks about right. UTG range should be extremely tight, like 88+, AQ+. UTG+1 and +2 I'm looking to add a tiny bit more as my position gets better, until I start to add bigger chunks of hands the closer I get to the button.

If you are playing $300 or less, you mainly want hands that can make top pair/good kicker or flop an overpair or a set. To play suited connectors profitably (or small suited aces, or the lesser broadways), you really need position because a lot of these hands' value comes from stealing when your opponents miss the flop. (Hat tip: Ed Miller.) Playing only high cards and high pairs becomes even more important the shorter you are playing.

Typically you should be looking to open somewhere between 8-10% of hands from EP, depending on stacksizes and opponents.

8% would be 88+,ATs+,KTs+,QJs,AJo.
On weaker or deeper tables we could expand this to something like 77+,A9s+,KTs+,QTs+,AJo+,KQo.

I wouldn't think playing 89s from UTG is particularly +EV, but probably not heavily -EV either. And for some board coverage and metagame purposes i don't mind swapping it in for like A9s or 77.
