Late Saturday night ~1:00 AM

V: Older Asian guy ~50 years old. In for ~1200 with a 500 stack now. Hero covers. We've been sitting for about 4 hours together. He's definitely on the loose passive side. High VPIP. No history. Hero is viewed as young TAG, only coming in for raises and have been tighter than usual.

Preflop: (7 handed)

Hero raise in MP to 20 with AJ
V calls in CO
all fold

Flop: (43) AQ4

Hero bets 30 - standard bet here for value
V calls

Turn (102) 7

Hero leads 70 - easy double barrel, no?
V calls

River (240) 8

Hero check
V bets 105
Hero ??

A high VPIP player has way more worse Ax combos than flush combos.

So don't check the river. It's a bet/fold for value, 100.

If you do check river, well OK.

But you really can't check the river with the plan to do anything but fold.

This and more this. He's definitely calling off a wide range here that we beat and raises a range that beats us. Passive players tend to only raise their strong hands and this is a perfect example of where we can bet fold for value.

Yeah pretty easy fold after you check. Passive players don't bet AT or A5 on this river.

Totally agree with everything.

Checking river is bad against this Villian because he bets when he is in front and you lose value when he checks behind with AT, A9, A5 etc which he would've called a bet with.

Am betting here for value, folding to a raise.
This is a pretty common spot where people will check thinking they are behind only too see villian check back AT/weak Ax/KQ and miss some fat value
I Think about 80-120 is a pretty good number, he might call with worst and call with weak flushes,2 pairs
If you check what is your plan if he bets? Call any reasonable bet? Checking also gives him a chance to bluff at it (given there are not a lot of straight draws out there)

I'd call. Villain can still have all 37 combos of missed broadways. He cant really show up with sets here and the 2p combos he can have should all be aces up. He can have around 30combos of flush that completed on the river but his river bet is actually suspiciously small. Most people would try to get a chunky bet on the river with flush or 2P, especially when they are stuck and cant wait to get unstuck. Furthermore, you are getting pretty solid odds to call.

This.

Villain is textbook loose-passive, and textbook loose-passive players aka fish don't bet this river if they don't have a strong hand.
