I think x and b flop are good options, but if we bet flop, we should check turn. We don't really have a hand that we can get 3 solid streets of value vs 2 others OOP, but we have showdown value. I'd def check turn & likely bet river vs BTN.
Vs decent players, it's a good idea to x back face-card/A pairs with mid to weak kickers OTF for a few reasons. Think of the benefits of controlling pot size (as much as we can OOP) with a marginal holding. As this hand shows, river play would be easier in a much less bloated pot. You also protect your flop x range. If your flop checks have zero value in them, people will abuse you on later streets. Here specifically, Q and 8 gives an open ender, so they're not that bad. K/7 give us gutters, and any spade gives us a bdfd, so it's not like turns suck for us. If we had say A8 here on a 873 two-tone board, we'd have much more reason to bet for protection. On J94r, there's no flush draws and we block some of the open enders with our kicker.
After thinking about it for a while, I feel like flop I'm going to be betting three ways here no matter my position, primarily for protection.
On the turn though, is where I'd change my action based on position. Vs this villain, I like betting oop for continued equity denial, but also because I don't want to give myself the opportunity to get bluffed off of my hand. However, IP, I can check for pot control. Vs straightforward villains I will check this oop, too.
Is the idea of betting oop here to prevent getting bluffed off, but checking IP for pot control solid thinking or not the right line?
