1/3 Tough River Spot with Straight

1/3 NLHE

Villain is a young white guy, ginger, and likes to talk of ****. Told story about being in Vegas and sitting next to a table with 7 world champions, but couldn't tell me the names of any of them, when asked. Drinking a beer.

Hero raises to $12 in EP with AJ

5 Callers

Flop is TT8
Pot is $62
Hero bets $50
Villain on the button calls. Others fold

Turn 7
Pot is $162
Both check.

Any issues with the line taken so far?

The river is 9

Why is this a tough spot

It’s obviously a bet. Stack sizes are pretty relevant here, but I prefer something big. $180 or so.

I do like this. But this is definitely a bet fold, OP.

River actually seems like a good spot to check induce, its not clear villain is going to pay off with worse and i dont like bet folding if villain will shove a hand we chop with. Would sometimes bet turn and think sizing on the flop is perhaps a bit too large. Checking flop is also reasonable.

The story is nice but what are villain's tendencies? passive or aggressive? loose or tight? Stacks? If v is loose passive, I might go for thin value like 40 on the river. I don't quite frankly understand the over bet suggested by matzah_ball given it's multiway and we are ep aggressor pre. loose passive don't give action to over bets but sometimes do call out of curiosity if the price is right.

+1. As already mentioned, stack sizes are important.

Re: 1/3 Tough River Spot with Straight

I'll assume $300 / 100bb effective stacks.

I think AJs plays much better as a limp in EP than a raise, especially at typical loose tables (which we obviously have here).

Assuming SPR is 4, I probably check/evaluate this flop. If some nitty guys get involved, I'll decide whether continuing will be profitable. If some action guys get involved, I might check/shove. If betting (which I'm not in love with on a board like this) I see no reason whatsoever to bet so much (I wouldn't bet more than 1/2 PSB and might only bet a 1/3 PSB as that will likely accomplish the exact same thing).

I also check (to mostly give up) on the turn.

Villain could check back turn with a bunch of hands, including monsters, a draw or a very mediocre hand. Mediocre hands might not pay off a bet on this run out (or, worse yet, turn their hand into a bluff and raise); I guess with the main draw busting that some mediocre hands might bluffcatch, but meh. Busted draws will definitely not pay off a bet (but could bluff or bluff raise). Monsters are obviously always raising a bet. So I would lean to a check and evaluate whether to payoff a bet.
