Hero is 366 deep and villian covers with 1000+. No history between hero and villian. Villian had just moved to the table about one orbit before the hand. Was talkative and made multiple references seeming to be a competent player.

Preflop:

UTG: Raises to 12
fold
Hero, UTG+2 (QQ): Raises to 35
fold
Villian: 4-bet to 85
folded back around to hero who calls

Flop (170): A 6 5 rainbow

Hero: Leads out for $100, Villain pauses then folds

Thoughts?

Should be moved to llsnl.

This is a -ev line with no reads at all on v imo

I agree I feel that I played this hand all wrong. With no history to asses a range to the villain I assumed KK+, AK. In a way I feel I got lucky the ace flopped so I could at least put out a block bet to put villain in an akward situation with potentially KK with deep stacks behind. Upon folding villain got up and claimed to have KK. What would be a better approach to the hand?

I'm more passive than most here, but I would typically just flat preflop for a number of reasons.

One, villain did just raise UTG, and a competent villain should have a fairly tight range here against a typical loose table.

Two, there's no other dead money in the middle to fight over. If this hadda been a lightish open and then a few callers, and/or a lot shorter stacks, then I'd more want to fight over the dead money.

Three, we're not shortish (not deep either, but definitely not short), and it's for a cheap price, so we're kinda fine playing a raised pot in position. And if half the world comes in behind us, oh well, we turn our hand into almost a setmining hand depending on flop action.

Four, our life sucks if we get 4bet. I mean, we really need to fold to a 4bet imo because he's obviously committing once he 4bets. We're crushed by most hands that would consider 4betting, and flipping with others. Is he really 4betting JJ? The other thing that sucks is that we'd love to see a flop against AA/KK for cheap because we have a very good chance at stacking those hands 1 out of 8 times by almost just setmining.

Five, another thing that can often happen here is we get a bunch of calls behind us and then some loose cowboy decides to go after all the dead money with a big squeeze bet, which puts us in a great position to win lots of money.

As played, I'm not even sure I like postflop. Was our goal to fold KK? But if that's the case, why are we calling the 4bet preflop?

We are not deepstacked at all on the flop. The SPR is 1.6. We are actually extremely shortstacked at this point.
