You're also thinking about things like "what better hands fold when I bet my K9s and what worse hands call?". They're thinking "top pair me must protect".

Really? You would check behind AK here on a brick turn?

Why would I bet the turn if I feel Hero is attempting to steal the pot with air (your reasoning for what OP often has given his line)? I'm not looking looking to fold out his air; I'm looking to eek out one more bet into the pot (either by making it myself on the river or inducing a bluffcatcher) while not getting myself into an awkward commitment spot either.

Course, admittedly the villain might not be thinking on those lines. But most villains are MUBSy and hate building huge pots without nuttish hands / putting in big bets that could possibly re-open the betting for large stacks.

And most villains don't like getting draws to suck out on them. If he doesn't think hero has a straight on the turn and he has AK, he isn't going to risk getting sucked out on, something most villains hate. Most villains don't think about pot building and mechanics like that. They are thinking about what they have and what can crush them.

Hero no longer has a straight when he checks.
