One concept (that I adhere to, although I may be in the minority) is that a lot of good players are good players not because they are good at tough situations but because they avoid tough situations (and likewise setup good situations) in the first place.

I understand this point, and I agree. But tbf, if these V's were the type to make me uncomfortable post flop then I would've folded this hand pre.

Yes, it is a valid argument. Making -EV plays preflop just to "improve your game" is just bad. What you are basically doing is making a play that generates money loss. We play poker to make money. You should wait until you're more experienced to take more marginal spots ime/imo.
