I was talking to a buddy about a 1/2 hand that happened to him awhile ago at a local poker club where the 1/2 plays bigger than a typical casino 1/2. Original opener is a aggressive fishy type who opened to 16 which was a standard open and gets 1 flat. My buddy had AhAd and make it 45 on the button and both call. Flop comes 9c7h3c and the original opener donk jams 680 into the 130 pot and my buddy covered him. What do you guys think he has and do you call? My opinion was I call as i usually put him on a club draw as I don't ever think he plays 1010-kk like this and usually never sets. What do you guys think?

Im folding all day here.Sets arent that farfetched, maybe he "doesnt want anyone drawing out on him" and We are a slight dog against most of his combo draws. We only beat his bare draws and i would say he has a set more often than he would do this with the naked draw.

very rare when I would be calling 340bb's w/ one pair, no draw.

In my experience these types of bets tend to be draws and weak top pair hands. I'd call but folding to such a ridiculous overbet is never a mistake. Did your buddy call?

This. But in this case, I would need to assess if V puts me on an overpair, which is a decent part of my range as a TAG player. I would fold, but wouldn't be surprised to see A9 or the club draw.

If you can (almost) rule out the fact that he flopped 2 pair, because of his raising range then I believe unless he flopped a set (11.8% chance) or is holding exactly 86 you are in front of all his other possible draws having equity on your side. You end up wining money by calling in the long run. I would also call.

Not folding. V is never bombing 4x pot bet with a set here

Very rarely will you see a set do this. This is most likely a club draw or combo draw here probably 90ish% of the time. Would need reads and info on V to make this call. If we aren't crushed we are probably only a slight favorite. Could have pair+fd

My buddy ended up folding and villain showed AQcc. The reason the conversation about this hand got brought up was because my buddy thinks jamming sets here against ppl that likely have aces could possibly be a better way to get paid than playing it normally and having scare cards shut down action since he was so close to calling. He thinks since it looks so much like a flush draw that most ppl will call overpot jam leads because nobody plays sets like that. I think you lose to much value by the times ppl fold but I'm just curious as the % of ppl that would call in situations like this to see if it could be a profitable play to jam sets like this.

What your friend is saying makes sense because let say you slow play (check or min bet) the flop with a set and the a third spade comes... the pocket aces are waaaay more likely to fold now when they would have probably called the all in on the flop with only 2 spades showing, costing you the chance of getting their stack.

at 1/2 i think the good players will know that they will have the best hand more times then not at the showdown (HU) and call a good %of the time with Pocket Aces and the bad players will not be able to let go of the aces even if they are beat. I think your buddy might be right.

Or we can just get value on every street instead of the 1/25 times someone calls

I agree w truby, in particular w aces here where you get sooo much value from Ks and Qs on 3 streets. Going back to your original buddies hand I don't like folding here without a pretty solid read, gotta gamble to win, I feel like I get shown KK-JJ all day here and lots of flush draws. People auto-check/raise sets here 90% which discounts sets a ton imo

Interesting also that not having the Ac in my hand weighs me even more strongly toward calling; as illustrated by Vils hand.
