What your friend is saying makes sense because let say you slow play (check or min bet) the flop with a set and the a third spade comes... the pocket aces are waaaay more likely to fold now when they would have probably called the all in on the flop with only 2 spades showing, costing you the chance of getting their stack.
at 1/2 i think the good players will know that they will have the best hand more times then not at the showdown (HU) and call a good %of the time with Pocket Aces and the bad players will not be able to let go of the aces even if they are beat. I think your buddy might be right.
