Ok so playing 1/2 at the local casino.

Hero($185)- been pretty card dead folding pretty much everything for the past hour

V1($117)- 50's older mexican guy wearing sunglasses, playing a lot of hands, his chip stack is constantly going from $50-$300 seems like every other hand

Action:
Hero is big blind and there is a $4 straddle

V1: calls $4
5 more calls

Hero: AQ makes is $20

V1: calls $20
Folds all the way around

(pot$ $60) Flop: JJ3

Hero($165): checks
V1($97): checks

Turn: Q-----Board: JJ3Q (pot $60)

Hero($145): bets $20

V1($77): calls $20

River: 5--------Board: JJ3Q5 (pot $100)

Hero($107): bets $38

V1: thinks for a bit and then shoves for $77

(Pot $215)

Hero:?

should this always be a call?

I don't see a fold here. If he has a J, good for him. But it's 50/50 that he has a J or a Q since there are two remaining of each in the deck, and a loose villain like this will be shoving either one for value.

bet the flop. doesn't have to be large. $25 should do it. It's a tough flop for him to have a piece of and you are probably ahead. but he also has lots of random hands that have 6 outs to beat you that aren't putting in another penny unless they pull ahead on the turn, so we want to protect our pot and have him fold out his equity here.

As played to the turn, v has $97 left going to the turn, correct? I would bet to get that all in the middle over 2 streets. $40 on turn, $57 on river.

as played to the river. Call now.

Preflop- too small. At least $25

Flop- suits? That makes a difference. With given info, it's not a bad board to bet but it kind of gets you close to committed so I'm ok checking.

Turn- absolutely a bet. Much larger. At least $35.

River- get it in.

Suitedness of board could completely change all this.

Proper bet sizing should make this hand trivial.

Shove river. Check on the flop is fine.

shove river. call as played and sigh he has 33 i guess. why do you think you played it "way wrong"?

I'd prefer to win the pot pre-flop if possible so I'd go for 40 pre and insta call a shove from V1 given the shallow stacks in a straddled pot.
AP even though his check-back on the flop makes me think he has a J ( recreational players at these stakes often check back these type of hands "to not scare the opponent"), once you've bet the turn you're pretty much committed so I'd just shove river to not give him a chance to check back a weaker Q and other weird hand he'd play like that and he might end up calling with ( like 66, 77, 88).
His tank shove on the river coupled with the flop check back read makes me think he really has it. So if I was at the table and I was confident in my reads vs him I might just let it go. But call cannot be that big of a mistake vs such opponent.

Cool thanks for the responses guys.

So i think next time there will be a bigger raise pre-flop.
the suits of the cards cant really remember...there probably was a back door draw on the turn most likely but by the river it didnt make it.

Results:
Ended up making the call and he turns over...J9 for the three of a kind...oh well on to the next one lol.

:grunch:

I hate playing OOP, even with a hand like this.

Make it $24-25 instead preflop (whatever makes the change faster/easier).

Is this guy spazzy? Is he capable of checking trips OTF IP? I might check/call or check/raise the turn if I thought he'd be willing to stab after 2 checks.

Once you make it $38 and he shoves for $40 more it's pretty hard to find a fold.
