1/2 Live Fold or...?

1/2 Live (no straddle)

Hero (Cutoff, $800): A3
Villain (Button, $1100): Good regular (is a thinking/competent opp.)
(Late night at a fit-or-fold table this villain is the only player attempting to make "plays" at the table given dynamics of people only playing the nuts and not bluffing)

Preflop: Hero raises to 10, Villain calls on button, blinds call (4-way to the flop, Pot = 40)
Flop, Pot = 40
Board = A42
2 V's x in the blinds, Hero bets 20, Villain on button raises to 45, blinds fold, Hero calls 25.

Turn, Pot = 130
9
Hero x, Villain bets 60, Hero??

Re: 1/2 Live Fold or...?

You should be pretty careful here pre flop, and you need to know your table.
If you think that $10 has a >75% chance to win the blinds uncontested, then this can be a fine play. This coupled with your equity post flop and you position should show a profit.
However, if you think that you are generally going to be getting 2 or 3 callers here pre flop, then you need to adjust by either raising a stronger range pre flop (A3o is pretty bad here multiway) or consider raising larger if you thnk that you can get considerably more folds pre flop.

I'd generally just fold this pre flop. But if you have a plan for the hand you don't have to.

As for the flop, it looks like a prety good flop but it isn't really.

You are drawing almost dead to any other AxXs hand, about a coinflip (on the good side) with any pocket pair that has a spade in it. Your two pair will almost certainly give someone a straight. You may be drawing close to dead vs a made flush already (at least 7 reasonable combos, prolly more given the small pre flop sizing).

And it will be close to impossible to get any money into the pot vs weaker hands when we 'hit'.

I would likely check this flop and bet most blank looking turn cards.
As played, I might just fold to the flop raise. I would also barrel a little bit bigger on the flop if I choose to bet at all. Try to get people to fold hands like A9-AK without a spade.

Re: 1/2 Live Fold or...?

I dont like the raise pre. We have A3 and its just never going to be profitable playing this hand even when we flop an ace we just never know where we are going to be. Villian can be trying to build a pot with the Ks here however I just think it's a fold on the turn. Villian story does make since and I'm just not going to be able to call a large bet on the river unless we spike a 5.

Re: 1/2 Live Fold or...?

having the only guy at table who is a thinking player on my direct left 400 big blinds deep sucks. seat change or leave imo.

as for the hand, I probably don't open this light, particularly when v has button.

flop, lead is fine, but I think smallish sizing invites v to make a play more often than you would see if you had bet 30ish. The raise sucks. I probably peel and c/f turn.

Re: 1/2 Live Fold or...?

I thought the blinds were weak opp. and i could outplay them postflop for sure... didn't have reads on v at the time.

Good advice so far

grunch

fold pre, as played x flop. assuming V bets, I dunno. It seems like x/call would be best, but that's inconsistent since if a blank hit the turn I would say x/fold turn.

Re: 1/2 Live Fold or...?

First thought, why is this player at your table and to your left?

Pre-flop open is fine.
Flop - Monotone Texture is fine for C-betting. Not ecstatic about doing it vs 3 Villains but it is okay.
When Villain raises, we be ****ed. He could be doing this with a huge range and only 1 card gives us the nuts. If we continue, we are playing blind and he can name his price on the turn and river.

The turn price is screaming value from Villain.

I think I would fold to the raise on the flop. For sure folding the turn if I get there.
