1/2 game with max $400 BI. Standard game.

Hero is in bb with J9ss. Villain is BTN with a $5 straddle. I complete, 1 caller, BTN checks.

Flop comes down 874r one spade, one diamond. I lead for 10. One fold, BTN calls.

Turn is Td. I lead for 25. V raises to 100. I raise to 300. He thinks for a while mutters did he hit a gunshot. He calls after about 2 mins.

River is 2x. It goes c/c.

I’m very sad at my check but idk if it’s results oriented or not. I was hoping he’d bluff off 300-400 more on a shove but he didn’t.

I think this is either a fold or raise pre. Given the straddle, max BI is 80bb so unless the whole table is deep, I'd probably just let this go pre. MP and on, I'm def coming in for an open raise. I'd probably check flop. This mid connected board seems decent for BTN. Not sure how much FE we have. I like our 3b OTT and see no reason to check river. He's likely checking back everything except 96 and J9. Just GII.

BTW, are you guys ~1k eff? Thats 200bb eff with the straddle.

Are you 500bb deep?

If there is money behind, I am betting river. Villain isn’t calling a turn 3bet without a really good hand but you are repping the nuts so he has a strong incentive to check back everything except the nuts OTR. Conversely since he should have a very good hand he may call any ‘reasonable’ river bet.

EDIT

Slow ponied. I will say at these stakes I think a good rule of thumb is always cbet OTR with the nuts unless you can think of a good reason not to do so. Kind of like, always reraise AA pre unless you can think of a strong reason not to.

Why would you check river? He's not bluffing with the turn call he obviously has a hand...
