Villain is late 20's /early 30's white guy... He has just sat down at our loose passive (profitable) table and has come out firing. He opened his first 2 hands for 10 from MP and just barreled both hands until opponents folded no showdown, double barrel and then triple barrel. He has opened both of his CO and buttons for 10 on first two orbits. One of the button opens went to showdown, he had A9s against both blinds, he checked back an AKT all diamond board on the flop, and it checked through to showdown as 5 diamonds made it on the board. So, seems aggressive pre-flop but hasn't shown anything unreasonable, seems like a solid player, sat down with 300$

his 3rd orbit at the table, guy to my right is taking a break so im BB..

folds to villain who makes it 10 from the button, SB folds..

Hero has 99 covers villain (300$ effective)

Hero 3-bets to 40$ (thoughts on this 3-bet? anyone prefer flatting here?)

Villain calls

Flop QJ5

Hero?

I would 3bet too but prefer 30. Should be same outcome but gives us a bit more maneuverability postflop on a hand that usually doesn't want to play a huge pot. As played I am kinda hating life and this board is about as bad as it can get. If you don't think his preflop calling range is strong I force the issue and put in 70 here and shove turn. If you do think it's strong I'd just wimp out and check fold. This is probably the worst hand we can have here so it's okay to let it go

With $300 effective, either call or make it 35 preflop.

I think I prefer a flat call more. Our hand is good enough to play post flop.

As played, cbet or check/fold are fine.

If we cbet I just give up on turn, jamming turn seems spew IMHO.

You have two threads for the same topic, this is my post from the other one:

I make it $30 not $40. I think $40 is too much.

A solid player's range to a big resteal should be strong. I get ready to x/f TBH.

Thanks, WereBeer. I deleted the other thread since yours was the only post in it and you'd already copied it here.

Given V's willingness to check post-flop with SDV, thus making it unlikely we're going to have him go crazy if we spike a set, I like a 3-bet here. I agree that the sizing is a bit large.

This flop smacks the heck out of his open/call 3-bet range, so I just c/f.

I like just calling pre

if we had 66 I would lean more towards the 3 bet pre hoping to take it down

Same with AJ A10 KQ KJ

99 still plays well post flop as long as you aren't a bad post flop player

as played

x/f flop that smacks his range

Ok, it sounds like you guys prefer a smaller pre-flop sizing and to c/f this flop. When I 3-bet from OOP I usually raise the pot plus a little bit to compensate for position, so usually 35$, but I added more to compensate for playing an aggressive player. Given what he called me with, and that I am at the bottom of my 3-bet range, I'm feeling alright about opening to 40$ but am open to the idea of lowering that sizing.

I agree that this flop smacks his range, and I probably should have c/f'd..

But, I don't know how to poker that good, so I put out a C-bet of 40$

thoughts on this sizing? Looking back, if i do bet this flop, I'm thinking sizing up makes more sense to get value when I do have TPTK or better, and to put him in a tougher spot.

Since we've decided check folding this hand seems best, I am curious about how we play the rest of our range. This is a good practice for me to be doing during a hand

Assuming it looks something like this (99+, AQ+, A3s)

99, c/f 6combos
TT, c/f?? 6combos or bet this hand since i'm blocking JT QT KT?

JJ, 3combos
QQ, 3 combos

How do we play these sets? Idk whether to c/c c/r or just bet them; Since we are checking 99 and maybe TT I think I would like to check at least 3 of these combos to protect those hands, is c/r or c/c better if we do that?

KK, c-bet 6combos
AA, c-bet 6combos
AQ, c-bet 12combos

I probably would've stuck with sizing of 40$ but sizing up seems like a good idea (thoughts on sizing?)

AK, 16 combos
hmmm another one I am probably not c/f'ing but maybe should be? seems like a better hand to c-bet than 99 though since it has maybe 10 outs against pairs and constitutes too much of our range to just c/f (25.8%.. substantial)

A3s (not spades) c/f
A3s (spades) c/r or play the same as our sets?

If anyone has the time to go through the rest of this range with me it would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to get better at making decisions as part of an overall strategy rather than hand specifically

Results: if anyone is interested

Hero C-bet 40$

Villain called

Turn 7

check check

River A

it went check check.. but couldn't this be a good bluff card? The reason I didn't is because having called the flop, checking back the turn made me think he could have flushes. I think a good bluff would have worked though

I showed my 99's

he showed QT
