Playing at a home game last night I'm up against a guy who is a former NFL player, don't have that much info on his play style. I don't have much history with him.

Hero BB: TAG with $220, have been folding most hands preflop and betting big when I have it, table is very aggressive

Villain is in MP with about $500 behind.

Pre flop:
MP: Limps $2
Limped around...
HERO: AK raises to $42

(I did this because the people are absolutely wild at this table and call any sized raise before the flop. I had also just gone to showdown winning a hand with 62 offsuit.)

It is folded around, and Villian calls after a second of hesitation

Flop ($100):
QT4

Hero: $50 cbet
Villian thinks about it and calls

Turn ($200):
6

Hero checks
Villian checks right behind

River ($200):
J

Hero value bets $40 (I had $88 behind after making this bet)
Villian snaps it all in.

Hero?

so the pot is 200.. and you bet 40, and you have 88 behind, and you have a straight and only lose to a flush?

yeah never fold please. you're putting in 88 to win 280. you only need to be good here 23.19% of the time for it to be a break-even call.

he can easily have QJ.

edit: also river should be a shove 100% of the time.

That's what I was thinking but at the same time all I think I'm beating here is a bluff because I'm pretty much pot committed and that only thing he's raising me all-in with is a flush. The only thing that made me think twice about that was that I was holding the Ace of clubs in my hand and he seemed to be a straight-forward enough player where he wouldn't check behind a flush on the turn.

Spoiler:
he also had AK, he showed

I am really unsure why you are thinking like this.

He is only shoving for 90 more. Do you know the amount of times I see worse here? Like 97 times out of 100.

It's not like he is shoving for 400 more. This is a spot that is a never fold situation.

Once again I have to note that a "thin value bet" does not equal a ridiculously small bet. Thin does not equal small.

Thin betting refers to the EV of a bet. If you think you are good 50-55% of the time on the river then you are betting thin. The size of the bet should relate to other factors. Don't bet small and telegraph relative weakness. This induces and then you have to call. Know if you are bet/folding or not before you bet.

I dunno what the question is here, you have to call. And what's up with the super tiny sizing OTR, bet at LEAST half pot.
