Exactly. A good example of this would be this article which really challenges conventional wisdom.

Quote:
The news on antioxidants, the darlings of the vitamin menagerie, is even more troubling. These compounds, which include vitamins A, C, and E, selenium, beta carotene, and folate, fight free radicals, unstable compounds thought to damage cells and contribute to aging. But not only do antioxidant supplements fail to protect against heart disease, stroke, and cancer; they actually increase the risk of death, according to a 2007 analysis of research on more than 232,000 people, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, as well as other studies.
The truth is very little is known in the diet industry. The evidence supporting many claims are very weak and many so-called experts spewing out the latest diet gospel often have an agenda tied to some food company. If you google "coffee is good for you" you'll finds lots of well written articles indicating just that. Google "coffee is bad for you" and you'll get the same result. In a slightly different context, this reminds me of what the physicist and Nobel laureate Richard Feynman said about what it means to really know something. When it comes to food not much is really known yet it's hard for many to see that given the confidence levels of the various "experts". This is why if Victor would have claimed, "No one really knows if a vegetarian diet is healthier", it would have been infinitely harder to attack. Of course, the very fact that that claim is so hard to attack points to why Victor's actual claim is so easy to undermine.

+1 on the bolded part.

Here's the clip I was talking about, the whole thing is excellent. The Q & A starts at the 40 minute mark.

I just wanted to express my strong support for pictures as a medium for expression and communication. As thorleif's recent edit to the cute cat pic aptly demonstrates, if something can be said in pic form just as well as in words, then by god post the pic instead! This should be an internet dictum that everyone happily follows.

Ha! What in your mind should be and what is sometimes aren't always the same things. A part of growing up is to come to terms with this

On this note, I will quote the infinitely wise words of a fellow 2+2er, who's a noted polymath with a PhD in psychology.

He has a PhD? Back when I first started playing I used to post on another poker forum that he frequented. I like that quote a lot btw.

Good find Miles. This illustrates why I think it's best not to believe any diet claim. Diet/nutrition is a science still in it's infancy, in a similar vein as astrology and alchemy long ago, populated with outright charlatans and well meaning but terribly wrong "experts". This is why I feel safe saying there is no good reason to believe that a vegetarian/vegan diet is somehow harmful or not as good as a diet including meat.

Of course, we also don't have good reasons to assume that a vegetarian diet is better than a diet including meat. What we do know is there are good ethical, environmental, and humanitarian reasons for not eating meat.

Yep, iirc there was a thread done in the SMP forum a couple years ago where people listed their backgrounds and I think that's where I first found out. He's one smart Swede.
