Hard to say. I suspect it utterly destroys most of those who are plagued with this illness. There are measures you can take to combat tilt:
1) Have a large enough bankroll where the losses don't financially hurt much. 1000-2000BB's should do the job
2) Always focus on playing well, not your results.
3) Play in easier games where you have a larger edge. Just knowing you have a large edge can be comforting even if you have a losing session.
Taking these steps will still not eliminate that punch in the stomach feeling you get from losing. That feeling torments most for their whole poker career. Only an accomplished few can eliminate that vexation, but it still takes them many years to do so. If you ever do, you will have attained poker nirvana. (I don't know anyone who has reached that stage, and if they say they have they're probably lying)
Bonus step:
4) Learn how to handle the ups and downs of life better. It will carry over to your poker game.
