I think it is more likely to be trips when they donk a blank turn than when they donk a face card. When the face card hits they like to see where they are at with a smaller pair and can fold if raised. Sometimes it's there way of bluffing a draw. If a blank hits, they aren't betting to fold. Many times they are hoping to get in a bet/3 bet. They also don't want to scare you too soon by CR the flop or turn. They like milking the bets out of you.
Sometimes people go for what I call the idiot check raise. That’s when you check call a street and lead the next card regardless of whether or not it’s likely To be bet.
At low stakes this line is probably stronger. At higher stakes it’s often some middling hand that doesn’t want to give a free card
weird line can be profitable... He raises flop, bet turn and you fold your ace high. If he donks turn you may think "what the hell? i'm calling". And he feels that if he checks, you may check etc.
I don't mean it's clear strategy on their part, it' more like subconscious feeling. Just make a note.
I think the difference is that I’m talking about a paired board that favors the pre-flop caller’s range in terms of having more trips than the pre-flop raiser, but less very strong pairs.
