I open red aces in HJ; button, who had out raising chips and just won $500 in pai gow says "you stole my play" and calls. BB calls.

Flop is J74r

I bet and only button calls.

Turn is 9, putting up a club draw

I bet, button raises, I call.

River is A, no flush.

Against many players I'd probably three-bet the turn, but I'm guessing that's not super-advisable at the 8/16 level.
As played, I'd try for donk/3-bet/call.
If he has two pair or a set and you check, you'll get in a check-raise.
If he has one pair and you check, he'll check behind.
If he has one pair and you bet, he'll probably cry-call.
If he has two pair or a set and you bet, there's a good chance he'll raise you and you can 3-bet.
If he has a straight then that sucks.

Three betting turn is suicidal at 8/16 without a read.

Given the verbal and chip handling tell, I'd donk with intent to three bet. It doesn't sound like he has a ton of air, may be tempted to check back his QQ type hands, and may raise you with a set. I don't think he shows the T8 here much, either (once again back to preflop).

Fwiw villain is female and it never even dawned on me that she could have T8. I was just trying to figure out how to get the most money on the river.

Just saying it seems unlikely she's smashing it in there w/ like T8o. I expect her to have her suited one gappers or 77/44 a bunch when she was ahead on the turn, and QJ/JT a bunch when you were ahead. So betting just seems better. Some portions of her range we get 3 bets when we could've gotten 4, but doesn't seem like much relative to her entire range.

I ended up checking thinking that she would bet almost her entire range on the river and I decided that I would be okay with three bets going in but not 4. In retrospect, not a great decision. If she can hand read, I don't have many aces in my range here

I donk/3bet/call river and don't think any other line is close. If you lost to T8 oh well.
