Kxos in the BB in an unraised pot.

After reading HEPFAP, I thought about the bit concerning A/K hands that flop top pair in unraised pots. From my experience so far, it has been totally true. Earlier today, I had K2os in the BB, one early position limper. Flop is KdQh7c. I bet out, limper raises, I reraise, he calls. Turn is an 8h, bet/call. River is an Ac. I bet and get called, he mucks. I see now as I write it that the A was a dangerous card, and c/c might have been better, since he could definitely hold 10 J, or a suited A.
The point of this is to ask: Am I putting too much stock in in this concept - where it is more likely that your K/A top pair is good in an unraised pot? I'm not saying I've fallen in love with the idea, but it certainly has been useful to be aware of.
Secondly, are there other lesser considered concepts that you have found to give you a leg up on your game? If so, let me know where they are discussed so that I can track them down. Thanks.

It depends on your opponents. HEPFAP was written for tighter games with opponents that are competent. If you are at a table with passive players who limp KJ and such then you are going to get owned with your flop 3bet in the example above.
