but that is why I sometimes do not like them - someone has to remind the player to wtfu since it is his turn.

I c/c and button shows A3. WTF? Despite several people telling me I was going to lose all of my money, I'm pretty sure I didn't even finish Bronze in the Maniac Olympics today.
Yeah.. but you are an O8 nit! I watched you play ~10 hands yest and you did not bet or raise once.. call call call, check call, call call..

In a 6/12 game I racked up 8 racks ~$1600 after 5 hours of play. I posted a chip stack pic somewhere a while ago. I really miss those games sometimes... as bad as the people are in my regular 20, these people are typically 3 times worse. lol

Why? I often listen to my ipod if the table is dead boring or full of ****** idiots. BTW, I also pay full attention, act in turn, know the pot size, and know who else is in the hand when I have cards. Prolly only 85% true if I don't have cards.

As long as you can act in turn, know the action and don't ask stupid stuff like "did he say raise?" when you have your headphones on, it should be fine. Everybody always say they can follow action fine, but it's weird that I always see people wearing headphones making action mistakes.

I get to play live poker so seldomly, I immediately talk with the people on my left and generally just have a good time. I can see how that would get old if I played > twice a month.
08-27-2010 , 01:30 PM
Dealer says raise. I see idiots not wearing headphone ask who raised? I say the guy with the 6 chips in front of him.

I don't think it's the headphones.. I think it's just the idiot not paying attention. The earphones for him probably makes it worse, but I see people every day with no earphones ask/say "Oh, he raised?", "who raised", etc, etc...

Quite simply the reason I don't like headphones at the poker table is the same reason I would hate to have someone that I'm trying to have a conversation with wear headphones (or watching TV) at the same time. Live poker is a social interaction and any social interaction should have one's full attention IMO.

Now I know many aren't actually or primarily playing for the social aspect and that's fine, but to me it still seems better to present the appearance that you are. No fish is gonna wanna sit down at a table with 9 guys who don't talk and all have iPods. I'm overstating the effect of course, but it is there for sure...

However I will retract my use of the word 'douche', it was admittedly too strong of a term. Mainly just bugs me is all. I give people my full attention and I wish they'd do the same.

It's not tilt-inducing though... If anything I'm usually glad to see a few iPod players because most of them are tight or TAGgish and thus easy to play against. Just as long as they aren't the majority at the table.

BTW I'm not a very social guy by any means...

I see where you're coming from, but I don't really play live poker for the stimulating live interaction. If I want that, I'm certainly not going to seek it out with a bunch of overweight, smelly degens who are cashing their government checks to gambool. I mainly play more live than online, because I sit in front of a computer all day and I like stacking chips.
08-27-2010 , 02:30 PM
Yeah, I don't really want to talk to the people I'm playing with very much. Of course, I play at the Commerce, and Jesse hit the nail on the head. If I didn't have my Blackberry to BBM people I would have probably put my fist through someone's face by now.

Besides, jomony, don't you want your opponents paying as little attention as possible? Seems +EV to pay more attention than other people.

I play a lot of live poker and I disagree with this point somewhat... and could list a lot of reasons - but just one.

I am a nice guy (or so I have been told) and get along with most people (drunks annoy me) but I feel no obligation to interact with anyone at the table, yes I do but I came to play and not to socialize. Tommy Angelo's mum poker etc. Yes, fish are not going to like to sit in a rock garden with everyone tuned out. But, if I listen to music and someone does not like it - tough. I sometimes plug in my earphones so people will stop talking to me but not often. Hint: I'm wearing earphones don't talk to me (dealers job to keep the game going and he will tell me if I need to know something).

But, if I wear earphones I can't pick up on audio tells; but Artillery runied my hearing. I can't hear women talking at the table

The other day I have JJ and guy bets river and I call - mumble mumble mumble - HEY! I HAVE NOTHING YOU HARD OF HEARING - I show my JJ, win and say yes.

I did some forum searching on that place... Scary meets funny seems to describe it. Thankfully the rooms here are much friendlier.

Well that is true, but like tells a lot of people don't know how to use what they hear correctly so it probably wouldn't be a big diff.

Anyhow, I suspect the real reason I prefer no headphones so I actually feel like I'm doing something social, rather than just wasting my life in a casino on a Friday or Saturday night...

Also, I have Shure earbuds, so constantly having people jab or poke me to get my attention would be very annoying... 'cause there's no way I'd hear anyone unless they had a megaphone.

I had it at the WSOP:
HJ openlimped, I said "raise" in the CO, but was still trying to get the amount. BTN and SB instamuck and BB says "raise" just as I'm putting out like 4bb raise and she puts out 3.5bb. Dealer says that does not constitute a valid raise and she angrily looks at me as if I did something wrong while taking off her headphones.

Haha I have them too, but only because I can't use crappy headphones anymore.

It generally depends. If the table is talkative and friendly then I'll take my earphones off and join in on the fun, but if it's super serious with lots of complaining about sucking out then I'll put my headphones back on and listen to music.

I have on occasions do the one ear headphone trick. It works better than it looks.

I get what you are saying.. but sometimes I just listen and turn up the volume. Sometimes I just put them away if the table is talkative and in good spirits. Often I will just listen w/ one bud in and have convos as well.

Still running like a god in this past month. I've put in 112.5 hrs of live poker at 6/12, made $6952, running at $61.66/hr.

Some of my favorite hands:

Hand1:
I defend Q8o in the BB after the BTN raises. 4 ways. Flop: T92. I c/raise BTN and bet 3 streets. Turn: 6. River: 5. I fastroll my hand over, and the BTN glances sideways, nods, and throws his hand in. Both his neighbors turn to him and say, "wat???"

Hand2:
I raise and cap JJ 5 ways. Flop: T98. Capped on the flop. Turn: T. I c/c. River: T. Both players pumping the flop slam their hands down on the table on the river, so naturally I bet. Guy with 99 calls, an overcall (no idea what he has), and the allin guy: 88.

Hand3:
4 limps, I limp Qh6h on the BTN. Flop: AhKdJc. sb bets, 1 call, I call. Turn: 3h. sb bets, 1 raise, I cold-call, sb 3!'s, guy and me both call. River: 8h. sb bets, 1 fold, I raise, sb 3!, I 4!, sb 5!, I 6!, sb 7!, I call. sb flips over T9o, whole table stands up to look as I scoop ~300 dollar pot against T-hi.

Ha at Villain in Hand 3 - everyone knows the 6! on the river means you aren't bluffing.

Yeah, so I'm pretty much calling BS at this point.
08-27-2010 , 09:32 PM
Why BS?
08-28-2010 , 03:40 AM
I one outed someone yesterday, which felt good because his 82o > KK on a 229 board...

3 limpers and I overlimp 55 somewhere around the CO. Around 6 to the flop of 678 UTG (main villian) leads, two callers, I call rest fold...

Turn 5BB

4

I haz straight... UTG bets again (rut roh?) a caller from the old station in the corner.... I just flat (probably terribad, but I cant see this dude betting this board with anything less then a chop hand...

River 3

He bets, a fold, I raise and win vs J8

Yeah, I know it's tournament stuff, but this guy is well known (notorious?) in the south SF bay cardrooms.

LOL, you must've missed the hand where I raised the turn with AQ high, 3rd nut low, flush draw in a 5-way pot. Unfortunately I get there and realize I have the J-high flush, not the A-high flush (my A-high was good for the high on the turn btw) and get scooped by a wheel and the Q-high flush. I am such an O8 fish.

I did scoop Matt Savage a couple of times, so that was good.
