I am pretty sure having oversized chips at small stakes is EV-, unless you're constantly lobbying to play table games, in which case that's also EV-.

You look way too serious by having oversized chips. If you want to buy in for four racks and look crazy, that's better. But just buying in for a rack or two and blending in with all the bankroll-less degens is best IMO.

I understand completely why people recommend buying in deep, but in my experience someone who sits down with more than $100 at a 2-4 game is likely to spew chips in all directions. If you're a decent player, there will certainly be times when you run more than 15 bets down before you start winning...but if that's happening a LOT you've got some things to work on in your game.

wat?

If 15 BB down seems weird ...

1. You may not have played enough to experience losing 3-4 pots in a row, or

2. You're too passive and don't lose 3-4 BB when you lose a pot.

Your skill level is irrelevant for sessions under 20-30 hours in length because variance will dominate short-term wins.

You should absokutely be viewed as spewing chips all over the place. Raising not only AK - offsuit! - but jamming with flush draws and betting with as little as TPTK.

Sometimes I do lose some big pots early. No problem, I just reload. That wasn't my point. What I was saying is that it has been my experience that when a player sits down at a 2-4 game with 3 racks, 4 out of 5 times they get up a while later with none. I love seeing someone sit down with that big of a buy in.

I'm in for $120 @ 3/6, $160 @ 3/6 kill and 4/8, and $200 @ 4/8 kill, and reload if I get down around 10-12BB. I personally love it when someone buys in for 3, 4, even 5 racks at these games because it usually means chips are gonna really start flying, but I've also noticed that it can tend to scare some of the loose/passive bread/butter producers away from the game and off to the front desk requesting a table change. Small-stakes limit is not the best place for an intimidating image.

A few sessions ago a kid sat at my 3/6 kill table looking like he just came from Central Casting and within 3 orbits had pretty much ruined what had been a great game. Well over 100 degrees outside, but he had a big thick scarf wrapped around his throat, a pair of Blue Sharks, great big Bluetooth headphones with nasty dubstep oozing out, bought in for 3 racks and started shuffling stacks of 20 with both hands. One by one my favorite retiree reg buddies started racking up leaving us 5 handed, and two of the remaining players said "I don't want to play short handed", leaving us drawing for the 2 available seats at other games. I drew a deuce and had to wait a half hour for another seat. Thanks, pal.

If buying in for 3 racks pegged me as an idiot, I'd do it every single timr.

Yeah, I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea...I don't assume that a player sitting down with a big buy in is a bad player...as stated in my first reply, I understand why people would do this for some very good reasons. I DO assume that someone sitting down and buying in for the minimum (usually $20 or $30 at a 2-4 game) just doesn't have a clue. I'm just saying that with all the advice ITT to buy in fairly large, don't assume that a big buy in means they are following that thought process. They may just have converted all the money they're willing to lose tonight to chips in one fell swoop. I CAN generally figure out which it is pretty quickly, though!

50 bets regardless of limit, except sometimes 5 bets because it amuses me.
At bigger games I think it's important to have lots of chips because I like to pass them around table whenever needed when other players need to rebuy.
Nothing worse than a guy that's just firing chips and waiting for a chip runner, or even worse walking to cage himself and missing hands. Also keeps game running smooth/fast.

confirm at 1/2 and above it's actually important to have loaner racks available which leads to buying in for 4 or 5 racks and adding on the moment you sniff two racks, which can make you look like a DB showing off but whatever.

edit: really this applies even at 40 and the like. the props at the bike would always have loaner racks available to speed up the game and accelerate their "consumer's" demises.

Playing in a four chip eight chip game with a kill I buy two racks. If I lose a rack I buy another. Not having enough chips to play your hand can be costly.
