AKo line check 4/8 live

EP-- open raise
Hero AKo -- 3 bets
BTN --calls
SB --calls
BB --calls
(15 SB preflop)

Flop: 345r

EP checks
Hero bets
BTN folds
Blinds and EP call

(9 BB before the turn)
Turn card is 9 (second diamond)

EP checks
Hero bets
Blinds and EP call

(13 BB before the River)
River card is Jh

Checks all around

Should I have tried checking through all streets?

Should I have bet the River?

A different line than any of the above?

Re: AKo line check 4/8 live

If the preflop play is typical of this table, then I like the preflop raise. Do you have any kind of a read on EP's likely range?

Btn calls 3 cold, the blinds come along for 2.5 and 2 respectively, and no 4 from the initial raiser. You are at a GREAT table. When you actually have a hand, go to value town.

But here you don't have a hand, just a couple of high cards. I can justify the flop bet...you did get button to fold, giving you position for the rest of the hand, and the other 3 just called and didn't check raise, so they don't necessarily have much.

But with three callers, they may not have much, but almost certainly someone has something, which is more than what you have. They all check the turn, giving you a chance to look at the river for free. Take it. They clearly aren't going anywhere, so save $8 and see if you spike a 2, K, or A. That's 10 outs to likely the best hand.

On the river, you missed. They all politely check to you. Turn your cards up and see who beats your high cards.

In a game this soft, no need to push hard with this hand. Save your ammunition for when you actually hit...they'll call, you'll profit.

Agree with 20dragons; flop bet is iffy but ok, I sometimes would make it. Turn bet is spew.

So your saying our hand has not a 1BB value here on the turn ?

If someone else bets and I can call for 1 bet, probably without getting raised, it is worth a call. But I'm not excited about putting it in.

Pot odds are there, new bet odds are probably not there.

I wouldn't call the turn bet "spew," but I wouldn't bet the turn, either.

op - it's probably the most beneficial to you to explain why you bet the flop and why you bet again on the turn for feedback

I also check turn, but I don't think betting is awful and I would probably bet if I wasn't last to act on the turn.

Three bet pre flops were unusual, but yes, this was typical of the play. It was indeed, a great table. EPs range was something like 66+, KQo+, QJs+ He was one of the better players at the table, but I have played with him plenty before. I don't ever recall seeing him 4 bet pre.

Thanks. I like your analysis.

Given the size of the pot, my first thoughts were, I am almost certainly in this hand to the end. I am calling a bet; so I am better off leading with it and trying to buy some outs along the way. I was also concerned that checking was like turning my cards face up.

Yes, you are probably in this to the end if the table is passive. But if the action ahead of you had been bet, raise, 3!, would you still be in? Or what if you bet, btn raises, and one of the first 3 check raises to 12-are you still in?

The flop bet DID get the button to fold and let you know that if someone is slowplaying a monster, they're waiting for the turn to spring the trap. MOSTLY, what it does is encourage them to check to you on the turn. Once the button folds and they just call and check the turn, you've hit gold; your $4 flop bet bought both the turn AND the river. Woo-hoo! That's why I don't mind the flop bet; it frequently gets you two cards in a situation like this.

What you really don't need to worry about in a "no fold em" game is giving away your hand. You could have AA here, bet it all the way, and get called on the river by a guy with 66. And he'll say, "I figured you must of had a big pair, I just wanted to see for sure." OR "I just wanted to keep you honest."

What I'm saying is, even if your play is so obvious that they figure out what you have it doesn't mean that they will make proper use of that knowledge. You really have to pay attention to what level your opponents are playing on in order to play optimally against them. In small games like this, obvious ABC poker is often the best strategy.

You have the best hand on the turn a lot more often than some seem to think, I don't like giving free cards to all the random overcards that will peel the flop.
