Live 8/16 at Commerce. Fairly loose/passive table. Temporarily 7 handed. LAG player that has shown down some weak hands and some monsters but mostly winners opens utg+1. For the most part I respected his game because he was getting thin value in a lot of spots, not missing bets or raises. Three cold callers to me and I defend 53 hearts in the big blind (seems standard). Cold callers are mostly irrelevant to this hand, except the first cold caller had been playing tight early on but has opennes up from tilt. Also had been betting in position a fair amount when checked to.

Flop: Kh, 6h, 5s

I check, LAG bets, first cold caller calls, all fold, I call (?)

Thoughts: I chose this line because I didn’t see much value from raising, which would give the LAG the opportunity to 3bet and force me to pay more to draw. I don’t think that he would bet an underpair here or air given how many people are behind him. I’m also worried about not having the best flushdraw, although fd’s are more likely to free card in the commerce 8/16 but I had not seen this player do that yet. I also did not want to bet out and allow him to raise out hands that would call one bet. All in all I think I like my line on the flop.

Turn: Qh

I check ...

Thoughts: My thinking here was that I wanted to check raise because of how aggressively he had been betting. However, I may want to bet here to prevent myself from getting b/3b by a better flush and for value/protection from sets/two pairs/pairs with big hearts/air with heart draws that cbet the flop. Most people will peel pretty widely with any heart here. Also, because I didn’t bet out or raise, it may be more difficult to put me on a flush draw.

Checking is good here too because I will have a lot of hands that will want to c/r for value out of the big blind, like kq, q7/q6s, 66, 55, and other flushes, as well as the occasional semibluff like a10/aj with ah.

Thoughts on this spot?

Given that your opponent is aggressive and goes for thin value i dont mind xr at all. It sucks when it checks around because obviously you want to charge the one card draws.

It's so rare that you are overflushed that I dont think it's something to be making massive adjustments around.

Donking turn is fine too if you really think that the LAG will ever check.

^Extremely juicy, and there are always tables to change to if youre running bad. Actually this table was really good because there were a bunch of multiway pots going off for two bets or one bet. Usually commerce games are a lot more aggressive than this one.

I was certain he would keep betting, but maybe this is a spot where I should assume a good hand reader will not bet again without a big heart, a flush or a set? I mean I think my own betting range would be pretty narrow on the flop and turn, betting into so many players on the flop and continuing on a scary turn card.

What about the flop play? Standard?

welcome to the forum!

preflop is standard.

flop i'd usually checkraise. combo hands like this are pretty strong. even if lag 3bets and drives the 3rd guy out we have pretty good equity vs say an overpair.

as played i would checkraise the turn.

the thought processes you're elucidating are at a higher level than those of most 8/16 commerce players. if someone is a LAG (too aggressive, too loose), then i think it's fine to assume that he will bet most of the time. against that player type, going for a checkraise is fine.

I like how you’ve played the hand so far and your thought process for doing so.

I don’t love to x/r the flop here because you put yourself in a situation where you may isolate yourself against a better hand and have to improve to win the pot. If you were on the BTN and a couple people had already called the flop bet, then I’d go ahead and jam the flop for value. But OOP I’m happy to play passively and then go for the x/r when the hand improves.

I would x/r the flop and bet the turn..

If he has a king he’s gonna pay you all the way but if he doesn’t you bet turn and river and try to win with a pair of 5’s.

Win or lose you will get future action on your bets and raises

I think it is fine as played and this seems like a really standard hand.

Agreed. Flop check raise is nice to pump 3 ways with so much equity, but a call then turn check raise is great too.
