Apologies in advance, I don't remember the specifics of this hand, it's just something I've been thinking about, and since this board is a bit slow there's no reason not to post it.

Villain is in UTG+2. All I remember about him is he didn't seem like a good player but seemed less incompetent than a lot of other players at the table.

4 limps around to me, I raise T9s on the button, BB and all limpers call.

6 players, 12sb, I don't remember the flop but it gave me a fourflush. BB bet, everyone called, I raised, villain looked disappointed, everyone called.

6 players, 12BB, turn make me a flush. Checks around to me, I bet, folds around to villain who looks disapointed, shakes his head, says, "Let's see if he's got diamonds" and raises. Folds around to me.

There are 15BB in the pot now and he's going to put in 1 more, so for all practical purposes I have to call 2BB to win 16BB.

I say if he's got a bigger flush, gg villain, I can't imagine I'm not showing this down heads up closing the action.

Any comments on the play on the earlier streets?

Thanks as always
DTXCF

Just based on his physical behavior and talk, he has you beat. But I’d still call down. Rest of the hand is good.

I've been in a situation like this one. He was one of those "trying to play good" type of players. He donked the flop to "protect his overpair" (it was some raggedy flop and he had something like 88), but then felt he should call the flop raise because of pot odds. He hit his set on the turn on a flush card and then felt he needed to check-raise because that's what you should do when you turn a set in a big pot (and I don't even think that it was the wrong play). All of the disappointment, concern, and muttering was absolutely genuine and not a reverse tell.

So although those live reads are often pretty solid, they're not 100% and you shouldn't do something drastic like fold a two-card flush in a big pot based on them. Just get to showdown when you have a big hand in a big pot and if you lose be glad that his acting prevented you from losing more.

This one seems pretty straightforward. Well played.

The correlation between his acting disappointed and saying, “let’s see if you have diamonds” is what leads me to believe we’re in bad shape. Those two things in combination are much stronger than if it were just one of them.

But yeah, we should never, ever fold.

Don’t fold. Bet the river if he checks.

Agreed. It's also not impossible for guys like this to do this with like a 7 hi flush, thinking it's the nuts.

You're probably beat, but I call down.
