So I’ve been out of poker for like 6 years. So what’s new? Are limit games officially dead yet?

Im probably a huge tell box at a live game these days. Its been a long time since I used my poker face. Online is easy in this regard if you can control your timing and your betsize is congruent with the rest of your range.

Guaranteed prizepools with topheavy payouts definitely attract more non tag players than cash game. They have different reasons, but i think ultimately it comes down to the survival factor, which brings an element not seen in cash games. Its not so much about being good at cards as its more about something approaching primal, and if you don't go out swinging youre likely to slowly bleed out.

It could also be that everyone who played LHE is so robusto that they don't need to play poker any more. I choose to believe that.

I think the last time I played was in Vegas, and I can't remember when that was. If an expert posted something, would it even be recognizable as good advice at this point?

Now I'm being bad at chess. 9 months in. Still finding new ways to be terrible at stuff.

Heh, I’m in the chess bandwagon too. Needed something quick to play and the fixed time aspect of it is nice.

The fixed time is really cool. Also, a surprising number of people I know played back in the day, so my friends who are good at chess seem to enjoy helping me understand how I'm bad at chess. I'm trying to find a fun way to suck less at knights. Seems like there must be some fun "learn how to play the jumpy knight" game online, but I haven't found a puzzle theme that is fun with them. I've gone back and forth on puzzles, but when I get into a puzzle playing groove, my game improves. I now spot forks more often.

Can confirm somewhat robusto. Went to Japan to snowboard in January. Went to Thailand to get high and golf. Going to Japan again to stare at cherry blossoms.

That and there aren’t any card rooms in the UAE yet. When they open, I’m gonna take some oil money back home to commerce.

Maybe not as applied to a super tough lineup where every hand is part of the solved game tree. But real games are still soft enough that there are tons of multiway pots, etc., plus there is plenty of room for exploits. I'd take the action of any former LHE crusher in basically any game I've seen spread anywhere.

FWIW, I've observed some reputable 2p2ers in the wild in recent years and they still seem to be crushing the games. Of course, they could have been running hot, and I don't know whether and to what extent they're working with solvers vs. just relying on their prior knowledge and experience. I value my anonymity too much to learn or say more.

I haven't seen any. I can't imagine there is much of an audience for it. Back when Live at the Bike streamed limit games (maybe they still do?) the chat was incredibly hostile. I'm always really surprised at how vocally hostile NL players are about LHE, and it seems specifically LHE. Like, they don't seem to hate on limit mixed games.

Here’s my take: a lot of players lose in limit hold ‘em as it’s a common place for beginners to start. They can’t acknowledge being bad so they berate the game. They’ve never played mixed games so they don’t have opinions on that. Also there’s ego about big bluffs, big money etc.

That makes sense, but I think a lot of people that started playing during the boom skipped LHE entirely. If they've played it, it was probably because they were waiting for another game or visited a casino without NL, etc. Then, they probably lose (as you point out) not necessarily because they are new, but because they don't understand LHE. People also hate the idea that they can't "protect their hand," that it seems like bingo, etc.

surfdoc always told us we were too lazy to switch over to NL during the boom, and that we were stupid for missing out on the real money. I can't argue with him. Some of us switched over to mixed games, and a few of them are famous/robusto at this point.

Having played a bit of O/8, this whole idea cracks me up. I used to absolutely crush LO/8 games where I was the only person who ever folded preflop and the only person who raised preflop. "Protect your hand" is impossible in that game. However, playing for $0 when you have garbage, playing for normal $ when you have OK hand, and playing for 2X the $ when you have good hands is printing money. Split game are just so good when you play bad opponents.

Don't know if I ever crushed, but you're inspiring me for the next time I find myself in Vegas. Soft live games are always fun.

It's worth it just for some free drinks and memories.

I probably did miss out on a lot of money, but poker always was more about having fun than money to me and limit games are substantially more fun imo. Nobody wants to sit around and watch others tank.

Heading out to LA for the first time, wanted to get into one of the 4/8 kill games one night I’m out there, would be either Friday or Saturday night. Just go to Commerce?
