I stop the dealer from pushing it to me and ask him to count, sure enough, it's $5 short, and sure enough, the SB swears up and down he put a $10, a $5, and five $1s.

In 4/8 structure games without rake, you can just make sure you have an even number of chips in a won pot assuming no all ins. If you don't, not sure what your recourse is though...

Foles is the luckiest human in the planet. See his 2013 season when he had 2 INTs and should have easily had 5x that amount if it wasn't for lucky bounces and crappy hands by the defense.

Those games are proof that keeping the right players happy makes a game, and that the sharp players should be laughed at. A* drops $200/hr with rake worse than the Rio at WSOP time, no problem. Long lists. There was a room down the street that tried like $3 rake, generous food comps at the table, and room comps almost for the asking. They could hardly keep a game going. They certainly couldn't get a big game, though for a while they had O/8 and then some 1/2/100 "PLO". Think they offered 10/20 for a while. Why go there to play in a bad 10/20 when there's a good 30/60 two blocks away?
I think the 50/100 goes with green chips, though I'm guessing that if you're the right player changing in from the 30 game, you're not forced to color up. I remember playing (20/40?) at the Mirage with $10 chips, and some Stud player sat with a bunch of $5 chips. The brush came by and tried to get him to color up. He refused and threatened to leave if they made him. As a very fun player, the table demanded that he be allowed to play wrong chips.
|
I always put whites out when I'm in the blind to speed things up. At the 50 game I put out 1 green, 4 reds, and 5 whites. Occasionally I see someone pushing barrels of red into the pot at 50 but they usually don't last too long.

It provides them with an opportunity to gamble (and free booze).

That's kinda shocking actually. Did the casino press charges? I assume this was SoCal, the Colorado poker market is quite small, and I would think that you'd lose your gaming license immediately upon being arrested for a felony.

Could be. Or maybe the Big Man upstairs smiles on him because he lives a Christian life.
At any rate, it's amazing that a guy that plays so badly sometimes, has his name in the record books so many times. Football fans 30 years from now might see that and think he was another Johnny U.

Re: 2019 NC/LC THREAD
Would be funny if the perp in Doug's story was a whale w a bunch of chips and a low bail and the rest of the table pitched in to bail him out on the spot.
I totaled a car 2 mos ago. Geico "tells" you what ACV will be and sends you check if you have title (minus deductible). Idk much about the insurance industry, but I know the methods they use to try and lowball customers in these cases and how the customer can maximize their settlement. Total loss triggered by body shop estimate 70%+ of ACV and/or safety related items that can't be confidently repaired.
If you don't accept the settlement offer, they slow-play, leveraging the fact that most people need a car to go to work. They send an MVR (Market Valuation Report) from CCC1, an "independent" appraisal company that works almost exclusively for insurance companies. CCC1 defaults to offering the lowest figure they think will avoid scrutiny. The main factor they use to justify the offer is the "comps", or comparable vehicles.
MVR lists 3 primary comps and 10 total. They cherry-pick the lowest and if you're driving an Accord or RX350 etc, they will have plenty to choose from. My car doesn't have much of a sample size though.
2/3 of the primary comps and 7/10 total, were automatics that go for $3-$5k less than the manual. We started off $9k apart and the way to close that gap is by providing at least 3 verifiable comps of your own, factory-added accessories/packages off the window sticker, and service records. I provided 3 favorable comps and noted the auto/manual discrepancy w a screenshot from dealership appraisal software.
The issue w some of the comps I provided was that they could not be verified, as I'd gotten them from a manager at a store in CT that sells more of this model than anybody. 20 days into negotiations, I started slow-playing Geico, until more favorable comps appeared. As the end of the year approached (adjuster under corporate pressure to resolve pending settlements by end of year), he offered up some favorable comps on his own. I accepted their 3rd offer on NYE.
35-40 days of negotiations and 10 hours of work yielded almost $5k more than their initial offer. If unable or not confident in providing your own comps, another option is to hire an independent appraiser for a couple hundo. Filing a DOI complaint - esp in MA, where way too much tax revenue is wasted on lazy gov't employees and OT details - just delays the settlement, w little/zero upside for the customer.
I don't have any issues w their methods, as a for-profit business. But I wanted to share this experience, in case people aren't aware of how to extract the most value in a total loss spot. Last but def not least, nobody was injured in the accident. And there's more to comps than your bj play

Re: 2019 NC/LC THREAD
We had a car stolen this past year and it was totalled on recovery because the damage was too great.
My experience was almost the opposite of yours. We got a free rental while everything was in motion, they offered us the high end of KBB on the first offer, which we accepted because it was above our minimum for accepting. We probably could have squeezed a little more out, but probably not enough to be worth the time and effort (admittedly, we drive ****ty, stock cars so we would have fought for hundreds, not thousands).
We switched from GEICO to State Farm when we bought our house. GEICO had the best car insurance premiums (so it was great when we were renting) but State Farm had a better bundle for car plus home.

Re: 2019 NC/LC THREAD
It sounds like our experiences were similar in a lot of ways. I got a luxury rental for 36 days, which I only would’ve needed for 20-25 days, had I accepted the first offer. I think KBB was low bc it doesn’t account for the manual vs auto price difference on my car (in the used market), likely due to small sample size.
I think the main difference was that once I realized what their criteria and process for the appraisal was, I was able to squeeze out an extra $4,700 from them, which ended up being $6,5-$6,6 more than KBB. CCC1 relies a bit on NADA but doesn’t use KBB (fortunately for this car, vice versa w my suv).
I ended up re-upping the bundle w them. If I didn’t think I could’ve gotten $500+ more than the first offer, I would’ve done the same thing you guys did.

Ah memories - Sgt Rock definitely advocated for keeping track of pot size (I can’t do it). I always wanted to use his description of a set of queens as “Six titties!” but alas I never make sets that win

I think so. He used to do epic trip reports on rgp. Of the old school story tellers, he and tiger123 were my favorite.

2019 NC/LC THREAD
I started running into him at Fortune and eventually stumbled upon his blog. I really liked it, but he never updates it. I think he has one update in the last two years or so. But it made me wish I could read something like that more often, so his blog inspired me to start making regular updates to my own. In fact, my whole concept of creating nicknames for all the regulars and maniacs was born from his Atlanta Braves roster.

$220 is like 27 bets? That's basically even. Congrats for being about even for the year.

In what fraction of the hands you've played this year have you folded aces preflop?

Re: 2019 NC/LC THREAD
I am up ten bets this year. Yes, I have been playing some 15-30 and 30-60 recently.
The funny part is that I would be down for the year if I hadn't been.
