In our room, the missed blind button goes with you. So if you pass on your big blind because you see a seat opening, you will not get free hands in the main game. Although sometimes if you are observant you can get the floor to move you faster than she otherwise would such that you get moved before, rather than after, the blind hits you.

Correct. I believe the rule is you get one courtesy hand unless you are the BB, in which case you get two. Some dealers will give you two courtesy hands, intentionally or not.
