Yeah - some variation on “show em or throw em” generally comes out

If they think I play good cards and my cards are near the top of my range, or if they think i play bad cards and my cards are near the bottom of my range, I'll fastroll and start texting on my phone to give the impression that I'm right in the middle of my range.

The second it seemed like a legitimate attempt at emotional hedging. Either way I have to take a deep breath and remind myself that these people are generally good for the game and admonishing them doesn’t do any good.

Ok feel better I got that off my chest.

Yeah. They get one strike from me and then they are tabling first or mucking for the rest of our lives.

Re: 2018 NC/LC THREAD - name TBD

An unknown is sitting in the game. He's wearing a very nice shirt, has a wedding ring which means some woman took him but his teeth are a gap filled brown horror, he has clown hair that's somewhat better than TRUMP's, which isn't saying much, is playing 80%, calls down w/ an under-pair to the board multi-way and is mumbling to himself. And I'm sitting there thinking: 'Is it possible that this fellow is as stupid as he looks or is this just the effect of losing?'

Am I going to hell for thinking that?

The effect of losing a pot, or the effect of clearly losing at life?

Am I going to hell for thinking THAT?

Long term, it's probably bad for your soul to conflate "bad at poker" with "bad at life" and "wins at poker" with "wins at life."

I would just assume he's one of many people who is successful at business and terrible at poker.

And being successful at business doesn't necessarily mean he's smart or anything, some people just run hot at life. Like he delivered pizzas to an early Bitcoin miner and the guy didn't have enough cash so he gave him $5 worth of Bitcoins as a tip and now some pizza delivery guy is a Bitcoin millionaire.

Or he has a rich family and a Dunning Kruger ratio of 10,000.

Success is a subjective definition, right? I've met more successful business people with bad attitudes than good attitudes, strange how that works.

Re: 2018 NC/LC THREAD - name TBD

Day after the 2016 presidential election, the owner of the company I worked for strutted into my office, clearly looking determined to talk about it. We had been friends for years, so I politely told him that I was incredibly busy (true) and didn't have any interest in discussing anything political (also true). He launched into a ten minute tirade, including screaming "**** you" in my face, then flipping the bird at me and the rest of his employees that "might not like how things are now."

That was a fun day.

Re: 2018 NC/LC THREAD - name TBD

I think there are times when someone needs to say, "I don't care whether your excuses are good or bad. I only care whether you get it done."

The people who use it too often are probably more successful financially than the ones who use it too seldomly. Of course you want to be the person who uses it just the right amount but if you look at the conditional probability of someone overdoing it given that ultimately it succeeded (financially), it's going to be way higher than the general population.

I'm pretty sure if you gave CEOs a personality test they would as a group score really high on narcissism and psychopath, and if you selected the CEOs you thought were great they would score only moderately high on those scales - that is, they can use those traits when needed but can also turn them off when needed.
