I know a long term NL winner that I've heard say stuff like this as recently as last night. I would consider anyone making money in the long run at poker "good."
93 percent of all players are bad

Games have been good so far. About half the normal sad refs but half out of town middle aged white guys who aren’t very good.

I forget how old you are. Middle aged?

I resemble that remark.

Half of them being bad means their cohort is far above average.

Good luck to all in Vegas for March Madness degenerate time.

Last night I had dinner with a lady and her four year old at their house. I grilled steak tips for us. It was more of a friendly meeting and not so much a date, but as MApoker taught me once upon a time, paraphrasing:

me: I went on a date and she walked out of the restaurant immediately after finishing her beer in record time.

MApoker: so you're saying that a female agreed to see you socially?

noted, touche, word.

A couple I knew invited me to dinner to meet a single woman friend of theirs. After dinner I 'walked' her to her car (reason for quotes coming up). A few days went by and one of the couple called bec the woman wanted to know why I hadn't called her for another 'date' (reason for quotes coming up). I answered 'bec she 'walked' back to her car so fast that I had to trot to keep up.' Women. Go figure.

Uh oh, more taxes

It's definitely a good problem. But the sticker shock is real.

20k for a 300 buy-in is a nice score. It's amazing how much roi is possible in the big field low buy in NLH MTTs

For those of you that have experience filing as pros, or just have good knowledge about taxes, what do you recommend as far as making quarterly payments? I admit to sending in random numbers last year and I feel it backfired. Is there an actual formula I can use? A % of YTD profit?
03-18-2018 , 03:51 PM
At a minimum (in order to avoid penalties) you will need to send in 90% (paid in 4 installments or one) of the previous year's Taxes Owed amount (Line 63 on a 1040). Use this as a guideline if you reasonably expect the same yearly for the current year.

If you have a big score that will tilt the amounted owed....you would do yourself a favor by paying what you "roughly" calculate as the fed's share when you make that quarter's estimated payment. As an example, you calculate you should pay the feds $7,000.00 per quarter. During the second quarter of 2018, you bink a tourney for $150K. It may be prudent to pay ($7,000) + (30% of tourney $50K) = $57,000.

You are not required to pay the $50K....but you will (1) still owe roughly that amount 4/15/19 and is prudent to pay the tax while you still have a handle on the $$$ and (2) on 4/15/19 you will owe the tax PLUS a larger** estimated quarterly for 2019.

State taxes are another mess and for that, you need to calculate what their requirements are for quarterly payments...if any.

**The larger amount is owed either way (assumed) because for 2019, you will still need to cover 90% of prior years....and now prior year has that nice bink that skews amount. What you need to factor in for 4/15/19 if you did not pay a larger number on the bink....you now have a larger 2018 tax plus a larger estimated for 2019 due on the same day.

hope that helps.

I have no patience so I am a bad poker player

Hmmm... since I already messed up 2017 I guess it doesn't matter that I was employed for most of 2016.

I had a career high score in 2017 but I don't really think it will skew my numbers this year since my regular stakes have effectively doubled.

So what you're saying is... I should send in 90% of what I owed in taxes for 2017 over the course of 2018?

Let's be hypothetical the other way? I have a much worse year. Or *gasp* a losing year? Do you send in money if you are losing YTD? Or what if you have a brutal second half? Do you get a refund?

I changed some study/play philosophy back in the day and worked my way up the stakes at the lingering end of the golden age of poker. My actual bank account was low and simply paying rent destroyed my bankroll. By the time the job situation was ironed out, PokerStars and all the easy target tables I knew of had dried up and I never bothered getting back into it and building a serious bankroll.

Given all this tax talk, sounds like my temporary severe financial hiccup saved me from some brutal tax codes.
A blessing and a curse, perhaps.

Why do I tilt so easily?

BB was in 8 seat I raise and win hand. I zone out and now button is in 8 seat and dealer declared kill pot. I say that doesn’t make sense I raised his big blind.

She says he won two in a row. Then how is he button? She said sb hand 1 and now button hand 2. I give up since people are starting to make fun of me and dealer thinks I am an idiot.

There is a non zero chance he did win two in a row but that means button didn’t move during one of those hands.

Sigh
