This only good if his spouse agrees to it. You, as a poker player, feel that someone who is "studying hard" and has the income he talked about should consider $X a reasonable amount. Not knowing his family situation, we don't know what his normal world spouse thinks on the matter.

As much as we poker players have normalized $1,000 swings and money disappearing into the aether, the truth is that 90% of the population considers this abnormal.
This makes total sense. Play credit card roulette out on a couple's night with non-gamblers in the mix. What are the chances you get freerolled? You'd consider a $100-$300 dinner tab normal gambling. It's 0EV, right? It is pretty likely that random puritan-inspired Americans refuse to pay if they lose because "we wouldn't really gamble for that much money".

$1000 swings? Play 30/60 or 40/80 (like you and DK do, sometimes) and make that $5000 swings.

I'm kind of confused what this is referencing?

To Doug and Calli; I know normal people don't really understand the gambling world, but if he was a poker player before she entered his life, seems like they should be able to come to a reasonable understanding. His plan in the OP seems plenty conservative.

I actually met my wife through poker and we had some issues for a few years and they all seem to be pretty resolved now. Things got much easier when I quit working. My only real current dilemma is that she doesn't want me to take trips that are longer than 4-6 days, outside of the WSOP.

I have more to say on this topic but cards are in the air at Commerce.

And that's how you go from stuck to winning 2.5 bets an hour.
I literally just had this happen only the river paired my gin card and villain scooped a 700+ pot

edit* and the board was 4d7dAc running sixes but whatev I had 8d5d lol

Re: 2018 NC/LC THREAD - name TBD

Gamblers are better at life than non gamblers.

I always have to fight insanely tough to not get freerolled on silly fantasy football weekly bets or cornhole at tailgates because a) they know I gamble and don't care if I lose $20-$100 on a bet and b) I am usually drinking when the bets are made.

It happens when we are discussing a theoretical bet, we never agree to it, then two days later after the event happened and their side won, they are asking me for money. Stupid jerks.

I think people who have an appropriate consideration for risk-reward do better than people who don't. But I think only the most successful gamblers fit that profile.

Re: 2018 NC/LC THREAD - name TBD

Been playing 20/40 7-handed @ Commerce for over 30 minutes now and over 40% of hands are being chopped.

How is this a real thing?

Can I justify not chopping 6-handed if the rake is $5+$1 or whatever it is?

My God. What a bunch of pussies. They won't even play 5-handed.

I've never played as big as 40/80 before but I'm considering giving Barry Greenstein some company.

Wish I knew that earlier. Just got there and I'm 6th up and the floor said it ends at 9:45. When I left Commerce there was no list when I called to put my name up!

Its a different board so youll have to ask specifically for that. Also LHE rarely runs on LATB.

No list on Poker Atlas, but they had a paper list here so maybe it's never on Poker Atlas.

This game is waaaaaaaaay better than the Commerce one.

Stuck $600+ in 21 minutes and I'm stoked about it!

Not to be that guy, but I told you...

The Bike is 1500 miles from me, I'm 20 minutes from a great game and I still travel to play there and hang out with friends.

I'm aware of that, but it is what it is. If I lost any more than $1000 in a given year it would damage my marriage and that's just not something I'm prepared to do. With that said, so far I've been lucky enough to avoid major downswings, and I've been lucky enough that the days when I lose my whole $200 buyin are usually preceded by a day I profited at least $200, keeping me above sea level. We'll see how long that luck lasts.

What happens if you make 2k this year? Can you lose 3k next, or still 1k?

I think we know the answer to that one. He received a flip out when he lost $400 over two days after winning $850 the previous two days.

Seems to be pretty common, but I just don't understand it. Also common is the willingness to spend much more on other forms of entertainment, which to me, confirms who is being logical.

How about not informing her of day to day swings? If she just knew you won 450 over 4 sessions she wouldn't be upset. A year end report of how you did with the 1000 seems reasonable.

This. Either don't play or get her to understand it's a long game. My wife doesn't ask about session to session. She trusts me and knows I'm up lifetime so it's fine if I have a losing month.

You absolutely cannot succeed if you're scared to lose.

My wife (that demon from hell) didn't like me playing poker so I started to give her a cut. Finally it got to the point where she'd want new shoes and ask 'don't you have a game to play in?'

lol, now I'm at the micros and could only pay for Walmart sandals.
