Labat on the Final Table with pocket kings, loses to trup queens. What a doof!

Decomposition of Californian manners well underway.

Me: "Excuse me ma'am, are you in line?"

Late 20s Early 30s Woman: "Are you calling me ma'am? Do I look old enough for you to ma'am me? Jesus Christ! Who even uses ma'am any more?"

Me: "I do ..."

(Mentally runs through about 10 different words to use instead)

Me: "... ma'am."

I use madam because that's what British Airways flight attendants use (and because people tell me ma'am is too Southern of me and implies an older woman), but I'm acutely aware that has a double meaning too.

I get why miss is offensive, but sometimes I use it for cocktail servers anyway out of lack of a good alternative.

I know a craps dealer who uses "sunshine". I never heard anyone complain about it.

Sent from under the table.

I say ma'am because miss strikes me as diminutive and I'm unaware of any good alternatives. In the U.S., madam is overly formal and stodgy and probably only amplifies women's visceral reaction to ma'am.

Usually I try to avoid the problem entirely by just saying "Excuse me..."

'Excuse me' is good but so is 'Pardon me' which I've used forever.

It works well when you run out of Dijon mustard and you need to bum some off the Rolls Royce next to you.
07-13-2018 , 06:40 PM
Just say "Hey you" next time you see that person.

Um yeah and also madam is slang for someone who runs a brothel.

I try to use Miss but do still use Maam quite often and dont think theres anything wrong with using it.

Better than being impolite in my opinion.

Ma'am is for older married women, basically 40 and over. Miss definitely 30 and under. 30-40, take your best guess.

Coming from every woman I've ever known, "miss" is preferred.

Whereas men generally take "sir" as a sign of respect, women usually take "ma'am" as a sign that they look old.

There’s a guy who, when I get in a game with him, invariably starts telling others about my play. It’s kind of annoying but at low limits I feel that:
A) people are gonna play what they’re gonna play, regardless
B) I can incrementally widen my ranges against him and anyone else I perceive to be paying attention to him to good effect

There’s certainly no reason to show a bluff when I don’t have to or otherwise demonstrate that “I always have it” might be mistaken, is there?

Could adjust many different ways depending on his perception.

I'll show one bluff, just to show that this OMC will do it. It has helped to get villains to call a big bet on the river when he knows that he is probably beat.

Sent from the nuts, or is it?

This happens to me sometimes and my response is: 'So what? You're going to call my raises w/ what you know are worse hands anyway bec you can't help yourself.' That has the benefit of both being true and, hopefully, aggravating to that person.

There is definitely a subset that target my “obvious AK” and cold call some pretty special hands, which is why I tend to not want to say anything at all
07-14-2018 , 03:56 PM
Go ahead and say it. You are playing low limits where players think that hands are pretty close in value and if it makes them even more eager to show you that they are gunning for you that's a good thing.

Interesting. Given that bad limit opponents effectively bifurcate the population into "People who sometimes bluff," and "People who never bluff," I'd think I'd prefer to be misperceived to be in the latter bucket, since a successful live limit bluff can pay off at a dozen to 1.

But of course bluffing never works at limit, so....

Last night my JJJJA < QJT98 all diamonds. With the resulting BBJ payout, all these years of playing 3/6 not that well have now not cost me anything.

Excellent!

Congrats!

Did it cost you using up your "one time"?
