Good point, we didn’t actually play the game just thought it was a fun idea. Maybe better to just observe a game and make prop bets on the players.

I guess you could just turn off action in hands where it gets HU (possibly mild moral hazard) but it would be more fun and build some incentive to make them pay 4x (or whatever multiple > 1) the pot to each player in the group if they lose to their horse.

Any other time of year you could probably get that game rolling with ease at the Orleans. Right now, every table with a dealer is being used.

In my experience they're bad all year round about starting unusual games. They could have 10 people on an interest list and plenty of tables and dealers available and they still wouldn't start it.

Random Ke$ha anecdote in case Jesse is reading: one of my coworkers puts a trivia question on his whiteboard every week. Two weeks ago it was Kesha-related.

"She's a singer," he explained to me.

That's how old I am now.

Jesse giggled.

"Liv Boeree is a science communicator and TV host specializing in astrophysics, rationality, and poker."

My dream gig, except that I would want to cover irrationality as well.

YouTube, IMO. Doesn’t pay much, but it gets you there.

My kids' dream job is Youtuber.

My understanding is that YouTubing sucks, and every time you turn around YouTube makes it suck even more.

The YouTube adpocalypse/demonetization problems hit a bunch of people hard over the last year. But some are still pushing forward through a combination of Patreon, commercially sponsored videos, other platforms, and other funding mechanisms (merchandise). Maybe there's a lesson here about eggs and baskets.

I think everyone is still waiting to see whether the channel memberships will pan out in a way that's good for content creators. It's too early to tell.

There's probably a ton of analogies with poker that are valid to consider when thinking about the level of suckiness involved. There's definitely some level at which it's a grind to make it. And you're subject to luck and circumstances that are beyond your control. You need some level of natural aptitude and intuition for how things work, and a certain level of intrinsic interest that keeps you going even if you aren't making money right away.

The structural problem is that huge monopolies, even ones that supposedly want to not be evil, can have huge impacts on the Internet ecosystem that they may or may not have considered (Google's pretty sharp so I'd bet they considered the fallout) and where their interests may not be well aligned with society's. It's easy for orgs to think they're not being evil but for the impact on society to be, if not evil, equivalent to the impact of evil.

Recap of June.

Went to London. Went to Amsterdam. Went to NOLA. Went to LA. Went to San Diego. Went to Barcelona. Went to South of France.

Ate about 6 stars worth of Michelin restaurants. Made ~$2,000 playing hold them. Don't go to Monte Carlo to gamble. It's stupid and stuffy, but you should go so you can say how stupid and stuffy it is.

Now I'm back in the hot sand box that is the UAE. Headed to St. Petersburg and Moscow for the World Cup next week. Any recommendations other than White Rabbit in Moscow?

Oh yeah, I'm married. Now I need to make 10x of what I'm used to from playing poker so I can lie about my winrate and still make profit from the tax(wo)man.

As someone with a YouTube channel, you are spot on. Definitely requires more skill to be a poker player, but it doesn't scale as well. But at least you are safe from the whims of Google.

I think the best strategy is to have a day job, and play poker/YouTube at night.

Well happy 4th for the affected.
