On one side, if I drive down to CAZ and offer to play 80/160 mix, what are the chances that I get to pick all the games if I wanted? I'm guessing ~100%. In the somewhat predatory world of poker, the worst player at the table is getting slack. Not being able to play mix games and being wiling to buy in, middle-aged fish guy likely gets a lot of latitude. This to say, "there are plenty of rules that who you are matters for bending". If the game is fun and the bad players want to shout "Raise Me You LOSERR!!!", fine. Fun and gamesmanship.

The flip side is I'm bothered by the reaching in the muck stuff. Especially when the hand isn't over, what happens when she grabs a live hand in a live pot and either flashes it or mucks it? Now whole pots are at risk. There's a line somewhere, and even the worst players shouldn't cross it. If this isn't over, it is close. Things could go really wrong if this is allowed to happen. You'd hope good dealers and floor people could stop this stuff tactfully, and not kill the game.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to put the floor in the position of having to choose between obliging my request to talk to the player versus giving one of the "customers" a pretty unnecessary lecture. Let me be clear, I think talking to the floor is fine and I'm not criticizing, I just wouldn't have even gone that far and think that the whole operation runs a lot more smoothly when folks go along to get along.

This is both a significant difference in degree and a difference in kind. Besides, we're not talking about changing the rules, we're talking about enforcing them (if this was even a violation of the rules). Maybe you disagree, but I really would not want to play in a poker game where every rule is strictly enforced without regard for context or intent.

I am totally with you guys about keeping a fun, positive atmosphere at the table. And that I generally cut way more slack to really bad players. If a couple of regs who I have played with enough to be comfortable that they know where the “line” is, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. The issue, as I mentioned, is that my experience with this person would demonstrate that they have zero knowledge of or care for the rules of the game. So wherever you believe the “line” is with OPTAH, I am 100% confident that this person doesn’t have a “line” around this behavior. So isn’t it in her best advantage to at least understand the rule and the purpose for it, so that she doesn’t escalate her behavior?

My idea of making a brief comment, but not dragging the floor over for a lecture at the table while I held the game up was trying to balance 1) keeping the good vibe in the game and 2) making sure she gets the rule, so the behavior doesn’t get worse.

I may or may not have done a good job at that balance, which is why I posted for feedback.

Lucy is allowed to reach into the muck. Verbal is not binding on Linus or Schroeder. Pigpen goes south several times an hour. Snoopy and Woodstock collude when Charlie is in the hand. This is all fine, but who keeps track of who can or can't do what?

Sig was not my idea.

Don't be dense and use common sense. Being a very strict rules nit is no way to get people to enjoy the game.

I see your point and it's totally fair. It should also be clear to any observer that you weren't trying to embarrass her or get her in trouble. I suppose my view is that it's not your responsibility to make sure she "gets the rule." We are all responsible for policing the game, but I think that means stepping in when and where (and only when and where) the rules need to be enforced. You directly, and it sounds like politely, told her that you believe what she did was wrong. She just wasn't very receptive. At that point, I'd drop it.

FWIW, I like how you're thinking about this.

It is all messy. I agree with your general point that there have to be some lines. Just think it is also clear that if 1 or 2 people create a given mid/high stakes table by showing up, they're probably getting more slack.

Silly app with it on by default.

Another thought is to talk about it *after* the hand instead of during the hand. That way it looks more informational about the future and less like it's about this hand.

"You know, in that last hand, you need to be careful. Someone else might interpret you telling someone what they should do with their hand as cheating, like maybe you saw their hand or something."

I just did this argument on B&M so apologies if it's snippy.

Rules aren't binary. We don't have to choose between robotically following every rule to the letter and a total free for all where no rules exist. Some rules are strictly enforced, other leniently enforced. And that's okay.

I liken it to speeding. We don't ticket people for going 66 in a 65 zone. Should we throw out all the rules against murder too? No, there's just some **** that we as a society have decided to let slide. You can generally OMG BREAK THE LAW by going 70. If you go 75, it might depend on how dark your skin is. If you go 80, you're definitely not complaining if caught. If you go 85 or 90, people are probably going to wish you got caught. Can anyone draw a line to exactly how fast you can go? No. Does this ambiguity create a total breakdown of society? No.

I was actually present when this happened!

She's there every day and consistently donates (although she's been running hot this year), so I'm glad you dropped it fairly quickly.

Also the pro that raised her will let her get away with pretty much anything, because he likes money.

Played some 3-300. There were 8 games running. The dealers are lucky bec these ppl tip when they get pushed $10! Not to be outdone I opened KJ CO and was pushed the $4 when everyone folded, and I gave it all to the dealer saying: 'I'm tipping you the entire pot just to say that I did.'

I guess that I'm missing something. Every time I've sat in there's no action. IDK how they can stand it. OTOH, maybe they enjoy staring down the player that's bet $20 into the $30 pot like they see the pros do on the tee vee.

I actually had a cash out error recently myself. It was embarrassing for both parties.
I crushed the local 15-30 and was cashing out $2830. It was late and I was very tired. They paid me $2380 (one rack light) and I didn't notice and drove the ten minutes home. When I got home and unloaded my wallet I knew it was wrong.
Luckily this is my local room and I know all of the floors and am (I think) a respected player. I called the floor, spoke with the guy who cashed me out, and he said "Let me do a count. Come back and we'll figure it out."
In the ten minutes it took me to drive back he had counted the drawer, knew I was right, and paid me without having to go to the video.
Then we admitted to each other that we are both dumbasses, and moved on. Thank goodness this happened in my home room.

PLO Live Blog - tried live blogging a PLO session and can't say it worked out too well, as far as content material goes. My play is probably also riddled with leaks. Also, finally decided to splurge on my own domain name and I'm looking into ways to upgrade the look and design of my blog.

Disagree 1000%

Is there a difference between disagreeing completely, disagreeing completely x10, and disagreeing 1000%?

This might be one of those "you had to be there jokes" but I'll give it a shot.

Yesterday I played a tournament for the first time in about 13 months, and when I won my first hand, I was really confused because I couldn't find a $1 chip to toss to the dealer.

I used to play a small tournament with my dad at Running Aces on Sundays; clearly, and toward the end of this stint of poor tournament selection I would start bringing singles or $1 chips to tip the dealer during the tournament.

It served a dual-purpose: it pissed off the other players for some reason (subtle reinforcement teehee), and it confused the dealers.

You can't use tournament chips to tip the drink servers; $1 checks work fine for that.

Talking Stick has a 3-6 Stud Hi game on Sunday which I got to sit in on for a bit yesterday, mom being in the hospital for tests. It's the same players every week and three of them are from the NYC area. I learned three things:

1. There isn't any decent Italian food in Metro-Phoenix (which I already knew was true since I'm from New Rochelle, NY which is half Italian).
2. Hold 'Em is like playing a slot machine.
3. Chris Moneymaker winning the main was the worst thing to ever happen.

The biggest lol was when I said 'I never had allergies until I moved to Arizona. Whoever said to move here if you have allergies should be dug up and shot!' and the entire table immediately exclaimed some version of 'That's right!'
