Obviously I understand it because I am not completely ignorant, even though I've never played a hand of poker in Colorado.

Howard Beale: watch The Deuce on HBO. Season 1 on demand, season 2 out in a bit.

It will bring you down memory lane of the grittier New York circa 1971. Start of legalized porn, pushing the girls / pimos off the streets into massage parlors, time square scene

Sorry for originally posting this in the CAZ thread..

Good thing you moved it in here. Over/under on 4 hours before Rapini removes it in the CAZ thread.

I may have a bit of a reputation but that doesn't mean that I'm familiar w/ every depravity known to man. Not that I'm unwilling but some things just didn't come up.

"Familiar w/ every depravity known to man", sounds like a good under-title. Could be on the long side. After reading some of those threads, thought maybe you did know all of them. I'm just a poor boy who grew up in KS and OK, so no real frame of reference on all of this stuff.

At Howard's age, he's more inclined to rearrange his life to drop a deuce than to rearrange his life to visit The Deuce.

Good morning.

Hi Bob! *waves*

Eat some chowdah for me. I was looking forward to the American Chemical Society meeting in Boston this past week but my company rescinded my permission to go. I've been craving chowdah all week and it's just not the same around here.

Lol. I have a place in mind. For quick and cheap quality seafood I go to the noname on fish pier east in south Boston. Was a favorite of mine for dates and for instant chowder when I drove a cab. Plus free parking is always a bonus.

I walk out of Target with a 6pack. Homeless guy is sitting on the sidewalk, 6pm, 75 degrees on a Thursday.

Do I give him a beer? Does time or weather influence your answer?

Assume whether I come home with 5 beers or 6 as irrelevant.
08-23-2018 , 11:44 PM
I'd offer him one yeah

I always give him the beer, no matter the time or temperature. It's not cuz I'm this super generous person, spending my days trying to make life better for those less fortunate.

When homeless people ask for money and I'm in the mood to give, I don't buy them a sandwich. The panhandlers most likely to get me to open my wallet are the ones who have a sense of humor and are honest.

If a guy is panhandling for drugs and is open about it, I might give him a buck or two. If a 45 yr old alcoholic/addict is panhandling and has a sign that says "Vietnam vet needs money for train ticket to mother's funeral. Please help, God Bless", I won't consider giving.

Whether it's the weather or public policy stuff, I don't seem to run across many homeless panhandlers, compared to other areas of the country. So they don't annoy me as much as they prob would if I was being asked for money 25x/day.

You just made me realize I pretty much only give money to people who don't ask me for any. Didn't realize I was doing this, will have to think about why.

I think it's good that you think about it.

Even advocates for the homeless say you shouldn't give money to panhandlers.

I think people should give money, but strategize how they want to do the most good. Like instead of giving $X/day to whoever happens to get in your face, make a $365*X/year donation to whatever cause you can 100% get behind. Like if you think we should help vets, give to Wounded Warriors instead of the random guy who may or may not be a vet. Or if you feel bad because a woman is out in the cold with a baby, give to a battered woman's shelter.

And then if on top of that you want to give random people beer or food or cash or socks (homeless people loooove nice socks IME), that's fine. Just don't let the "oh i impulse gave someone a buck" substitute for real giving.

Cool story bro time.

My ex girlfriend and I went to stay at a Boston hotel for New Years. I managed to talk her into going to the noname for dinner. We smoked a joint in the parking lot and went inside to eat. We were literally the only customers in the place. I ordered the broiled smelts and some chowder. Just a few minutes after our food arrived, about eight uniformed police officers come in for a break. Of all the open tables in the place, they were seated directly to my left. One says loudly, “what’s that smell?” Another points directly at me and says, it’s the smelts!” And they all turned to look at me. Sucks when a bunch of cops get position on you. Luckily they were on break and they declined the exploitation.

Reminds me of a couple articles I read some time ago about giving to the homeless:

https://www.newstatesman.com/politic...omeless-people

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/03/o...out-worry.html

Similar article to the NY Times article, without the paywall: https://www.americamagazine.org/poli...-spend-it-lent

Interesting that the head of the richest organization in the world, which owns lots of buildings which are only occupied for a few hours per week, would lecture others about how to help the homeless.

I don't see the dichotomy.

I don't think the message is "everybody should give more to the homeless", but rather, don't let your morals or anxiety about what they do with the money stop you from being charitable. I can definitely relate. I used to have this hangup that if I gave money to a street beggar I might be indirectly hurting them if they used it for drugs or alcohol. So I didn't give them the coins in my pocket.

Then I learned to just let it go. It's a charitable transaction in itself, and once the transaction is over it is no longer any of your business how they use it.
