I think we're cut from a similar cloth in this sense. I don't view disagreement as a form of dislike. I actually think that a willingness to disagree and elaborate on your perspective is the most effective way to find what's true and make better decisions.

I got to see one of those things that turns into local urban legend happen today, unfortunately at an adjacent table. There's a group of players who bolt right at the end of the lunchtime promo period, on this day, 2p. This guy gets up, is replaced by a young woman who is a relatively new player, being the SO of one of the big game players.

At 2:03, she gets her 2222 cracked by 7777 for about $37.5k after taxes. The displaced promo chaser is probably still there right now telling whoever will listen about how he missed the jackpot.

When I see "OMC", the person I picture was at my table last night. He is generally grouchy, he sits out a lot, and he asked for a wash of the deck from every single dealer. He is also super nitty.

Last night I was playing with OMC on my direct left. It folds to me on the button and I look down at J9o, so I raise. OMC in the SB tanks for several seconds and then decides on a fold, but he accidentally flips his cards as he was folding, which were .... AJo.

What kind of self respecting OMC tanks before folding AJo?

He's balancing his folding times?

More like he's balancing the times he's going to give an angry speech after folding.

If he was going to complain, it would have been because his AJ was not suited, since if it were he would have called (not raise - why raise - you haven't even seen the flop yet) due to the possibility of hitting a royal flush and getting a $500 bonus.

Another OMC who plays very fit-or-fold called in in the BB, we saw an 8-high flop, and I took it down with c-bet. As it turns out, I'm sure the first OMC considers it a good fold on his part because he also would have folded the flop - so he saved himself money by folding preflop.

Any suggestions for the best graph theory textbook? While back someone recommended the Freedman, Pisani, Purves Statistics textbook.

Hmmm, I have a master's in industrial engineering which is one of the heavy statistics field, and I didn't even know there was a subject called graph theory.

Is there somewhere specific you're trying to get in graph theory? Or just learning to learn?

Just learning to learn. I had Applied Combonatorics (by Tucker) suggested to me. Thanks for answering.

I've heard good things about "Pearls in Graph Theory" (Ringel, Hartsfield), but I've never actually look at it myself. (I've grown quite fond of Dover books for many reasons, including the fact that they don't charge $100/book. I've found them to be of pretty readable.)

Also, a caveat to Tucker's book is that only about a third of it is graph theory.

Any recommendations for linear algebra?

Sorry. I don't have any recommendations for that. I've taught it out of Leon, but wouldn't say that it was particularly good or bad. It just seemed like an average linear algebra text.

I learned out of "Linear Algebra Done Right" which has an unusual approach. I don't know whether it was good or bad for me in the long run, as I barely remember anything about it. I just remember it felt abstract and didn't deal much with matrices/determinants.

There's a "Linear Algebra Done Wrong" but I don't know anything about it. I'd like to imagine that it was written as a response to "Linear Algebra Done Right" and that it somehow takes the opposite approach... whatever that actually means. But it's free and the author seems to be actively invested in it. (2017 is the most recent update.)
