I think we're cut from a similar cloth in this sense. I don't view disagreement as a form of dislike. I actually think that a willingness to disagree and elaborate on your perspective is the most effective way to find what's true and make better decisions.

Here's some stuff from Ray Dalio that touches on that topic:

Aaron, if you're ever in the SFBA, I'd be happy to meet you in person and grab a beer or whatever. If you don't want to argue about financial stuff we can argue about isochron dating and the Hebrew word yom.
I grew up in the East Bay and I still have family there. I'm sure we can find something to argue about.

I knew they were lovers.

Couples do tend to argue about money and sex most often.

I got to see one of those things that turns into local urban legend happen today, unfortunately at an adjacent table. There's a group of players who bolt right at the end of the lunchtime promo period, on this day, 2p. This guy gets up, is replaced by a young woman who is a relatively new player, being the SO of one of the big game players.

At 2:03, she gets her 2222 cracked by 7777 for about $37.5k after taxes. The displaced promo chaser is probably still there right now telling whoever will listen about how he missed the jackpot.

When I see "OMC", the person I picture was at my table last night. He is generally grouchy, he sits out a lot, and he asked for a wash of the deck from every single dealer. He is also super nitty.

Last night I was playing with OMC on my direct left. It folds to me on the button and I look down at J9o, so I raise. OMC in the SB tanks for several seconds and then decides on a fold, but he accidentally flips his cards as he was folding, which were .... AJo.
05-16-2018 , 09:57 AM
What kind of self respecting OMC tanks before folding AJo?
05-16-2018 , 10:03 AM
He's balancing his folding times?
05-16-2018 , 12:28 PM
More like he's balancing the times he's going to give an angry speech after folding.

Will it be about my age, my ethnicity, or my general disdain for money?
05-16-2018 , 01:17 PM
If he was going to complain, it would have been because his AJ was not suited, since if it were he would have called (not raise - why raise - you haven't even seen the flop yet) due to the possibility of hitting a royal flush and getting a $500 bonus.

Another OMC who plays very fit-or-fold called in in the BB, we saw an 8-high flop, and I took it down with c-bet. As it turns out, I'm sure the first OMC considers it a good fold on his part because he also would have folded the flop - so he saved himself money by folding preflop.

Any suggestions for the best graph theory textbook? While back someone recommended the Freedman, Pisani, Purves Statistics textbook.
05-17-2018 , 09:53 AM
Hmmm, I have a master's in industrial engineering which is one of the heavy statistics field, and I didn't even know there was a subject called graph theory.
05-17-2018 , 10:07 AM
Graphs are a fact, not a theory.

This post is brought to you by the ghost of Euclid.

Regardless I blacked out or close to it every night in NOLA so hope you, your friend, and his girlfriend had a phenomenal time in NOLA!
There are two reasons that south Louisiana fishing is so good. First, they have a lot of fish. They also have very generous limits.

That was an amazing evening. I ended up wearing a paper hat from a donut joint after getting picked up at like 5am while steadying myself on a light pole. And yes, the ‘ladies’ at the club are fond of happy endings.

Thanks Bob. I’m still lamenting the one I couldn’t land, tho.

Is there somewhere specific you're trying to get in graph theory? Or just learning to learn?

I'm not sure why someone would recommend a statistics textbook for graph theory...

I messed up that initial post. I should have been more clear. During a discussion about math, someone suggested this as a good statistics book. Not one for graph theory. Here is the post: sorry Can’t link to it on my phone—2013 May NC/LC thread micro stakes post #325

There's a fundamental problem with how statistics is taught.

Most students take a statistics class as part of some other discipline. I first encountered it as a sociology major. Economics, psychology, political science, etc. -- all these departments have their own statistics classes.

The result is that statistics gets taught by teachers who don't really understand it. As a result, they don't really teach the underlying probability theory (or they don't teach it well), and they don't teach the proper logic underlying the tools.

The further result of this is that people misuse statistics more often then they properly use it.

I did not really understanding statistics until the second year of my statistics masters degree at Berkeley. I really finally got it when I was starting to teach it to undergrads as a TA.

I highly recommend that anyone who wants a good understanding pick up the Freedman, Pisani & Purves text. I TA'd for two of the authors, and Freedman was on my dissertation committee. Best text for stats, hands down.
Just learning to learn. I had Applied Combonatorics (by Tucker) suggested to me. Thanks for answering.

I've heard good things about "Pearls in Graph Theory" (Ringel, Hartsfield), but I've never actually look at it myself. (I've grown quite fond of Dover books for many reasons, including the fact that they don't charge $100/book. I've found them to be of pretty readable.)

Also, a caveat to Tucker's book is that only about a third of it is graph theory.

Thanks again. Yeah for Tucker that was my understanding as well.

Yep on price. Typically I’ll just buy an older edition used book to cut down on costs.

Any recommendations for linear algebra?

Sorry. I don't have any recommendations for that. I've taught it out of Leon, but wouldn't say that it was particularly good or bad. It just seemed like an average linear algebra text.

I learned out of "Linear Algebra Done Right" which has an unusual approach. I don't know whether it was good or bad for me in the long run, as I barely remember anything about it. I just remember it felt abstract and didn't deal much with matrices/determinants.

There's a "Linear Algebra Done Wrong" but I don't know anything about it. I'd like to imagine that it was written as a response to "Linear Algebra Done Right" and that it somehow takes the opposite approach... whatever that actually means. But it's free and the author seems to be actively invested in it. (2017 is the most recent update.)

Rolled the dice on a case. The price was right. I'll report back later.

A guy in the AJs 6-12 was using some sort of disc with the Green Lantern symbol on it as a card protector. AJs $2 chips are yellow. LOL him.
05-17-2018 , 07:16 PM
The most lol re The Green Lanterns is that each was responsible for patrolling some number of galaxies like that's easy. Even Superman had his hands full w/ just the one planet, jfc.
05-17-2018 , 08:50 PM
I'm quitting poker because the monkey that sat to my direct left flatted KK like four times and did it once when I picked up AA in the SB and raised, only to smash a 2K337 board.

That and I run like dogpiss and tilt like no other, but still. Mostly the KK flatting monkey.

Most galaxies aren't as bad as our planet.

Why do you think we've never made contact with alien civilizations? We're being shunned.
