Welp. It's all moot now anyway. My wife has an IUI scheduled for 7 AM tomorrow and that requires a 430 AM wake up call for both of us.

I'm sure they would be happy to have any additional players.

Have any of you read "The Course" or I believe it's called The one percent? By Ed Miller. I know these are NL focused but do the concepts apply to limit as well? I heard a podcast talking about them and it sounded very interesting.

I have Poker's 1%. I have not read it. The Course might be the only Ed Miller book I don't have.

The Course is pretty good. I definitely think some of it is applicable to more forms of poker than NLH.

To me, very little of it is going to help with LHE.

Re: 2017 ustakes NC, where the steaks are wafer thin (Low Content Thread)

I like having a huge library of poker books but that's why most of the NL ones have been barely touched. Why study something I'm not planning on practicing tomorrow?

My current studying consists of:

Painless Poker by Tommy Angelo
The Poker Academy's LHE course
SnapShove 100 calls/100 shoves
Vlogs: Lex, Neeme, Owen, Polk

I bought a meditation bench and a zabuton last month and I have about five books on Buddhism and mindfulness on deck. I'm not a huge fan of Painless Poker but I think it has life changing material in it.

This is borderline heretical but if you get to choose exclusively NL or exclusively LHE and you choose exclusively LHE, you're making a huge mistake unless you're in a very small subset of situations. If you're capable of learning both games, that's best, but if you can only learn one, you should consider making it NL.

You should be proficient in NL if you care about money because the WR/SD ratios for NL are way higher than for LHE. You should be familiar with 1/2 NL and 2/5 NL because for 90% of live players those games are more available than LHE and for 90% of the remaining 10%, you will sometimes face a scenario where your preferred LHE game isn't available and 1/2-2/5 NL will be your second best option.

I live in one of the few areas where LHE is a non-laughable alternative to NL (the SFBA ladders are much deeper for LHE than NL). And even while I regularly played MSLHE, there was a significant fraction of time (10-20%) I spent at 1/2-1/2/3-2/2/3 NL as a "waiting" game.

Maybe if you spent most of your life living in a LHE paradise, ignoring NL would be okay. But if you have a ten in your hand and a gleam in your eye, you shouldn't.

Re: 2017 ustakes NC, where the steaks are wafer thin (Low Content Thread)

I definitely live in a predominantly LHE area and I would consider it a paradise if bigger games were available closer to my home. My local casino has recently added 15/30 and 30/60 games, albeit only once a week and the 30/60 is probably a pipe dream, but I could see the 15/30 expanding into a daily game eventually.

I'm no slouch at NL, but I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means. I do a lot of practicing at micro stakes online on my "days off," but I don't do a ton of work on my game. I have absolutely no data to confirm this but I'm pretty confident I could beat up to 2/5 NL in most areas.

I usually warm up in 1/3 NL games when I'm waiting for 20/40.

+1. I see the garbage people turn over only to fold 3 hands in a row and find myself lost.

I would agree that if you study poker at all and can quickly identify game quality, you can beat 2/5 NL live.

Re: 2017 ustakes NC, where the steaks are wafer thin (Low Content Thread)

I have 83 hours of live NL in 3+ years with a 6.3 bb/hr win rate.

That includes a -$1300 2/5 session in 2.5 hours where I triple barreled a full stack with AJcc on Qc72Kc9 and got picked off by... 32o. Then later I built up to $700 and got $250 in pre with KK and the same player stacked me again with A5o on a 432 flop.

Only 30 of my live hours are at 2/5.

Including online, i have 542 hours at a little over 5 bb/hour overall and basically all of that is at $100 NL or lower.

Shrug.

I agree if you can find soft 2/5 games. Otherwise, not so much. If big bet 1/2 is substantially different than LHE, then solid 2/5 is a world away.

IME live 2/5 is a joke. As calli mentioned, the sharpe ratio of the game is way better, so the skill levels needed to consistently grind out $ relative to average is lower.

I've also played cancerous NL games, though, so there's that.

Straight up win only, to win my suicide pool. I’m locked into tie 2nd at worst. You take: 49ers over Rams, BAL over CIN, or CHRG over OAK?

Is it popular there? Years ago you couldn't even buy it in California.
