We go through different types of charities, too. Religious, non-religious, domestic, foreign, etc.

The bonus is that we get a chance to talk about stuff we don't usually get to talk about. I think December's theme is going to be radiation. A few weeks ago we were reading The Way Things Work and my older son developed a fascination with nuclear weapons. :/ So it'll probably be nuclear nonproliferation NGO vs chemotherapy/cancer related nonprofit.

When you think about what a destructive impact cardrooms have on the community, seems only fair to give back to them.

One of the biggest mistakes of my life was giving money to charity under my real name bec it's created a deluge of solicitations, a truly incredible amount. My advice, if you've never donated money to charity and want to start, is to buy a money order and send it in w/o any identifying info.

Cardrooms are a net positive to the community if you use dynamic scoring.

Same goes for donating to your alma matter

Just don't give people ****ing money ever. It's always a net-negative if you get credit for it.

I donated a small amount years ago, and then got a small mountain of mail for years afterward. I'm certain they spent more on that than I ever gave them. Look up a big name charities' statement sometime. It's staggering how much they spend on advertising and solicitations.

I figure pig4bill has me blocked at this point so this reply is mostly so this sort of stupidity doesn't spread.

1. Of course a lot of charities spend a lot on overhead. Some charities are outright scams, spending 100% of their money on CEO salaries.

2. But just as bad companies don't make you decide to stop investing, neither should the existence of bad charities stop you from donating. There are sites dedicated to screening charities, and not surprisingly, just like investing, a cursory amount of research goes a long way.

3. There's nothing that stops you from locating local charities that don't spend money advertising. But because they don't ... drum roll ... they're hard to find.

4. A large overhead doesn't necessarily mean a charity is bad. Let's say you run a charity taking donated food and delivering it to a war zone. What percentage of your monetary budget do you think would constitute overhead - collecting donated food, packing it into an airplane, negotiating permission, etc?

5. Instead, look at what a charity does and first ask whether it's something worth doing. Then counterscreen by asking whether anyone else is doing it. Does SOMEONE need to solicit, collect, screen, and deliver blood? Yes. Aside from the Red Cross, is anyone else doing it? No. So you should donate until your blood donation charity (you know, the one you're going to start and run and not spend a cent on yourself on) is up and running.

6. As a side note, I am not a huge fan of supporting charities that fund curing diseases. There's a lot of money floating around. If you don't think Alzheimer's research is going fast enough, the shortage is in ideas. All the good ones get funded from the corporate world.

7. Out of ideas?

- find a local battered women's shelter, they don't advertise
- Red Cross or Medicins Sans Frontieres
- children's cancer

If you don't have a lot of money, here are two where you can make a little money go a long way.

- make a brown bag lunch before you go into the city. Find an amputee and give it to him when he asks for money.

- knit or sew hats and blankets for the NICU in a local hospital

Re: 2017 ustakes NC, where the steaks are wafer thin (Low Content Thread)

Today I decided that for the very reasonable price of $4 I would limp in UTG w/ 92 just to say that I have. No, I did not win.

------------------

I get so many charity phone calls it's absurd and I run the suspect ones through Charity Navigator while they're on the phone. I really like telling them that they are officially a scam. Except for the fake police charities. Those I tell that I hate the police and, wow, are those clowns not used to that.

A reverse bad beat story:

Really good 4/8 table. I open 87cc UTG+2, player in MP 3b, HJ (posted) cold calls, one of the blinds call and we’re playing a big one 4 ways.

Flop: KQJxxc

I check, 3 bettor bets, call, call, and I peel one off here with a BDFD getting 100000:1. Probably still spewy though.

Turn: (KQJxxc) 5c

I check, MP bets, HJ calls and I call.

River:

River: (KxQxJc5c) 4c

I check, MP bets, HJ folds, and I get in the ‘ol check raise. Fastroll of course and he shows us KxKc.

I’ve never seen someone so tilted.

Re: 2017 ustakes NC, where the steaks are wafer thin (Low Content Thread)

I feel like I need a ruling on this one. The game I play semi-regularly is spread adjacent to the daily $35 donkament. To break up the montonomy i will sometimes get a last longer bet going with the people at my table. Which is kind of a hustle because I have a guy who plays this 40% juice tourney like everyday and tends to go deep. He looks like the penguin from the Batman movies which is an extra bonus.

So four of us put two large and pick a horse. 150 runners and we agree to double stakes if your guy ships it. One guy busts immediately, other three are going strong. We clarify the bet that chopping with multiple horses involved constitutes a tie. One guy busts 22, another 11 and my guy is the chip leader when they chop three way. I conceded that I don’t get the doubling bonus, right move?

Cali had lots of good advice in his donations post. I like the quoted one. If you do this, stop and ask his name. While homeless/hungry people need shelter and food, often their biggest complaint is loneliness - people often walk by without even seeing the homeless. Just simply asking their name reaffirms their humanity.

If you're cool with giving away half your value in bets regularly, yes.

Just kidding. This is correct.

An old nittish regular in the 20 game that I've been playing with for 12 years did the following two things yesterday.

Open limped UTG w/ 84s at a full table.
Folded to my CO open in the BB w/ Q9o.

Hand 1 he was stuck and steaming. Hand 2 he was up and happy with himself.

5 years ago I was playing in a 40 mixed game and was hungover and asked a regular poster on here for advil and said I will give you $100 if I win the tourney (which was starting in an hour). I chop it 3 handed for the big end and give them $40 because I technically didn't win (chopped for 2/3rds of 1st $).

Yeah, but you really should have seen this coming. These small donkaments almost always end in a chop.
