A few weeks ago I was having lunch with one of our business development people, i.e., non-scientist. I ordered a Diet Coke and we end up having a conversation about aspartame (specifically, what do scientists think about the claims that it causes cancer/AIDS/whatever it's accused of nowadays).
I pointed to an old quote, which is that "the dose makes the poison" - everything in excess is bad for you (including water) and the amount of methanol released by aspartame is comparable to what you'd find natually occuring in fruit and while you will go blind if you drink a cup of methanol, a little bit here and there won't hurt you.
"Of course," I added, "if you're drinking a two liter a day you might want to look a little more closely at the scientific studies."
A few days later Trump's diet became national news and I dropped by to let him know that "on further review of the scientific evidence, I've concluded Diet Coke causes diarrhea of the mouth."
