Go straight to SSHE unless you know absolutely nothing about Hold 'Em.

Good morning,

Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving.

If anyone is around the Massachusetts south shore in February, consider yourselves invited to my .25/.50 homegame.

SSHE is great, but it actually says it is not for beginners. While I don't think someone would need to be advanced to handle it, I'm really not sure it would work as a first book on holdem for a true beginner.

For a real newbie, I like Miller's "Getting Started In Holdem" (hope I'm remembering title correctly). I don't remember Jones' book that well but I thought it wasn't bad.

If I was to make my previous post better, it would say what chillrob's said. I should've mentioned GSIH.

Reservations. Hahahahahaha.........

We went to the Hyatt Regency buffet in Scottsdale which we won't be doing again. We noticed - and were wondering why - there were so many fewer diners than last year. I assume it's bec they raised the price from $79 to $89 and that must've done it. I mean it's nice and all but not $89 nice. Plus they bring the bill and there's a line for 'tip', ofc, but I ask if the tip's already included which it was for 18% which, ok, the wait staff has to make a living but, come on, all they do is bring drinks and clear the plates. The waiter said 'it's there in case you want to add more.' lololol........more than $16@ to clear plates, jfc. BUT.....

I hope you've all had a nice Thanksgiving!

My original post was "Howard, where did you take mom for dinner?" but I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt even though I knew better.

Good TR. Next time I'm in Scottsdale for Thanksgiving I will be sure to pass.

I really, really went off my diet. It'll take a few days just to get rid of what the plate full of cake, pie and w/e those custard filled things are called, nm the pasta, quesadilla, mac & cheese, crab legs, shrimp, mussels, and, oh yeah, a bit of turkey and a slab of prime rib. And mashed potato. nom nom nom!

HOLY ****.

I should've gone easier on the dessert.

Thanksgiving quesadillas.

Really good one, too.

I hate turkey. I had one slice drenched in gravy, and then loaded up my plate with sides. Had a bunch of appetizers beforehand too.

My Thanksgiving was depressing. Canceled on my mom's side, the one with the good food, because of my very sick, very beloved aunt. Second, gym was closed. Third, I have to work. Poop day all around.

Also, the idea that Howard would invite someone to dinner in a mean way is mind boggling. Howard seems like a super nice guy, and he's definitely on the list of people I'd look up if I ever make it to AZ. My assumption would be he's making the invitation to enjoy the pleasure of your company.
I'd probably assume the offer was genuine in SSLHE and sarcastic in MSLHE.

Thanks Cali you too.

I just broke a bad streak of about 20 small stakes mtts none of which I cashed.

Reminds me of the baseball season that I hit exactly .000. I took a year off and regrouped. Came back faster and stronger and made the summer team. We made the playoffs that year of 15 year old babe Ruth league. I threw out a guy at second base in my last game ever played and went 1/3 with a single in my very last game ever playing real baseball.

I appreciated the ramble.

This just in: I still suck at online poker because I have no patience.

I bet on teh ponies for the first time ever over Thanksgiving.

Currently .000 lifetime. I suspect choosing horses by the nerdiness of their names is EV-.

Maybe. But so are most strategies.

Here are some other personal pre-race observations:

Rarely, if ever, will you see a horse win after he relieves himself in the post parade.

In the Kentucky Derby, we picked More Than Ready. In the Preakness, Fusaichi Pegasus. After placing our bets, we watched in despair as both horses dropped manure on the track minutes before the race.

Would they have lost anyway? Probably. But as far as we were concerned, their pre-race bowel movements sealed their fate before the gates even opened.
The sad thing is that I have no idea if this guy is being satirical or serious. I've actually heard the opposite advice with the logic of "Would you run your best if you had to take a crap? Probably only if you were running to the bathroom, but these guys can go anywhere so that's not a big deal."

I'd really like to try to do a data science/analytics type project on the horses. I'm convinced that it's completely beatable and not excessively difficult. But I don't have the up front time to invest in really getting to know the sport deeply enough to understand it.
