This is overly harsh. He admitted that evading the payments was childish and stupid. (And it was.)
But, medical companies routinely wildly inflate the bills to begin with, so if the original bill was 5x what it should be in an ideal world, and they cut it in half (to 2.5x), then DarkKnight paid 40%, he would have paid what he would have paid in an ideal world. Insurance companies negotiate much lower rates than the wildly inflated "face" rates by lowering the uncertainty of non-payment; your insurance company would have gotten a lot smaller bill than DK did. And yes, it's a stupid system, but it's the system and if he's able to get off on a technicality, that's already priced in. These safeguards exist because process servers aren't saints either.
Pay your bills next time, DK. And you should save up $20k and donate it to charity because you just received $20k worth of charity.
