I am on Vista Home Premium and am running Python 2.6 with apparently no problems, but....

I created the "python26" directory as "c:\python26" so that it is located directly in the root directory. I also went into "properties" under the "security" tab and edited ALL the choices to "full control" for that directory. (which trickles down to automatically give full control to anything below that directory. That gets rid of the "authority" issue that vista sometimes has.

It might be something else, but if it is the hdd dying - then you need to get the hard drive into a caddy on another machine as soon as you can.

At the moment your data is probably still fine, but the more times you run the machine up and fail, the more likely you are to do something irreversible.

Bite the bullet and get it to a computer shop/pc doctor or whatever and recover your data, starting with the stuff you care about most.

This must be the sh*ttiest program ever.
I follow all instructions
download the idiotic python
installed the f#cking matlib and numpy ar what ever it is called
then restarted my computer
everything according to the instructions.
then when i clcik on fpdb.py and i just get a stupid small msdos-like screen, then it looks like the sh*tprogram of fpdb is gonna start as i see a window appearing, and then boom it stops.
Terrible.
Even more terrible is the post above that it crashed somebody's computer.
I would stay away from this piece of crap software.
you get what you pay for.
If this guy cannot even program in a normal computer language, and make a descent installer, then what sh*t would be the actual program be.
just my f#cking humble opinion

This is the most common issue with new installs - you aren't connecting to the database.

That is just FUD. I appreciate you are frustrated, but his symptoms are hardware failure, not caused by fpdb.

Python, MySQL and PostgreSQL are all stable applications. About the only thing fpdb could do to cause instability is fill the hard disk

I know this is a rant, but for completeness i'll respond.

Python is a standard and productive language, and used extensively in many areas.

The install for fpdb on linux is about 5 lines long including full database setup. We have a quite a few happy Linux users, and almost never have an installation issue from these users.

The install for windows needs to be redone, and we accept that. This is the number 1 requested feature, and until someone steps up to make it happen, it will likely stay that way.

Sorry for your frustrations.

Popeye, the only terrible thing is your post and attitude. Your post is so stupid I think it might be a joke but....

People have spent a lot of time making this program FOR FREE because they love to program and play poker and want to give something nice to the poker community. Then you come in with some misguided sense of entitlement and act like a spoiled child and throw a temper tantrum because you can't figure out how to make it work on your own. Couple of points:

a) You think python "is not a normal language"? (lol) Python is currently the 7th most popular programming language in the world, it is incredibly versatile and permits you to write cleaner code in less time then arguably any other programming language. Many many people who are way way smarter than you love python...hmm maybe those guys at Google who made python one of their three official languages are idiots? YouTube, one of the highest traffic websites in the world is built on python...maybe those guys are idiots too?

b) fpdb did not "crash some guys computer" His hard drive died and was almost certainly not caused by fpdb. It is almost 100% likely that it was mere chance that caused it to die after he had recently installed fpdb and not the fault of the program.

c) We are all a little stupider for having read your post, I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.

Regards,
Neko

kudos to sorrow for being a little more diplomatic than I was

ah well,

Sorry for my anger outburst.
When i can't get things to work, i really get enraged.
that plus lately i personally go through a tough time.
but thats personal so i won't talk further about.

Actually we should be grateful for people like that, who write free software.
I again am sorry for my ourburst.

I will try to look into what sorrow said about the problems of the program connecting to a database.

About linux (kind of offtopic)
I don't see the point in having a pokertracker in Linux, as no pokerroom supports linux. I never understood the whole thing with linux. yes it nice for wordprocessing and surfing the web and all that. But when it comes to a lot of programs one has to use in linux WINE. In my opinion it is crazy to play pokerstars in WINE if i just as well could have windows installed.

About my intelligence?
Well it is nice to know that the majority of those 23 people that are smarter then me use Python.

I "think" the "%homepath%" is meant to be YOUR name. On my Vista it is

C:\User\(my name)\AppData\Local\fpdp

But, fpdb NEVER seems to access the files there. It only accesses my files under c:\Program Files\ Fpdb\pyfpdb

I am running Vista Home Premium and having very little problems. It does "lock" my poker screen about once a week. I play every day, so it may have nothing to do with fpdb. It seems that when some other program (MS update, Virus updates etc) kicks in, it's just too much. But closing the program releases my poker tables immediately. Open it again and fine for days.

========== Post #2 "Outburst"

Regarding the "outburst"... felt the same way for over a month before getting mine working last year. Now, it seems stable on my Vista system... as stable as anything can be on Vista. And I applaud your apology, very mature.

IMHO, as Sorrow touched on, is a complete installer for Window's Vista. I can see why it is on the back burner for now. One, lack of anyone willing to wrestle with Vista... and now Vista 7 would change that all again.... sigh.

The other point, albeit not every week, is that fact that FPDB is still in a constant state of flux. As quick as they would make an installer, things change.. Plus with options such as Postgres or MySql, another variable. Additionally, in trying to accommodate everyone's requests, the Hud_config.xml file is constantly being improved. I get tired just thinking and typing all the variables... and they keep varying..

I concur with other posters. This is more a product of love by poker players, for poker players. Anyone that wants a ready-made product with little (maybe) problems, should do PokerTracker or HEM. If you want something for free, there is a "price". The price is patience or in my case perseverance. If I put up with my ex-wife for 9 years, this is a piece of cake. I use her picture as my avatar...

Good luck, I hope you decide to hang around, fight through the issues and get it running. I love mine. Yes, there are things I don't like, but little by little I've learned (not a coder here) to fix even little code issues.

Hi Joseph and meandog, maybe this helps ...

On my Vista laptop, the HUD_config.xml is read from:

C:\Users\MYNAME\AppData\Roaming\fpdb

I don't know if this is specific to laptops or what, but that's where my config is.

I dont own a windows license, and haven't for the last 12 years. My options for online poker are currently Stars using wine, which works pretty much perfectly.

I have no options for a tracker, hence my interest and participation in this project.

I think the config detection needs to be ripped out and replaced.

My suspicion is that if there is a file in pyfpdb, that is used in preference when saving back - which shouldn't be the case.
