Creation of the new evironment installer is going pretty well. If everything goes alright we are hoping to release fpdb alpha3 and the new installer on tuesday.

So long any complains, suggestions and other remarks can be posted here, PMed or you can try to reach us via IM. We will try to help if we can.

SQLlite support would indeed be nice, but from the benchmarks I've seen I'm not sure if its worth it, SQLlite seemed to pretty consistently score an order of magnitude worse than the "full" databases. But if someone wants take a shot feel free to, I'm working on CB detection atm.

Using the package manager (I think it's called synaptics) install the dependencies: mysql, python, mysql-python, pygtk
I don't use ubuntu but I'd imagine it will at some point prompt you for a MySQL root password enter one and when it's done installing everything open a shell/terminal and type this:
mysql --user=root --password=YourMysqlRootPassword
It should say something like this:
Code:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 4
Server version: 5.0.60-log Ubuntu Linux mysql-5.0.60-r1

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql>
Now type this:
CREATE DATABASE fpdb;

Next you need to create a user. Type this (replacing newPassword with the password you want the fpdb user to have - this can, but for security shouldn't, be the same as the root mysql password):
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON fpdb.* TO 'fpdb'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'newPassword' WITH GRANT OPTION;

Then download one of the alpha2 archives from the sourceforge page at https://****************/projects/fpdb/ and unpack it into a folder of your choice.

Next create a directory called .fpdb (the . at the beginning is important) in your home directory, e.g. /home/steffen/.fpdb
Then copy the default.conf file from the docs directory of the archive into this new folder.
Finally edit default.conf with any texteditor and enter the fpdb password you entered above (in the GRANT ALL... command).

This should be it, try double clicking pyfpdb/fpdb.py or open it from a shell with python /path/to/fpdb/pyfpdb/fpdb.py

Let me know if this worked or if you had any problems

You do need it, but the package manager will take care of that automagically

On another note, I made the Gentoo ebuild useful now and it also obseletes the Gentoo install instructions. You can get it at http://trac-git.assembla.com/fpdb/br...ild?format=raw

Where's the repository? Sourceforge says you have CVS off.

Edit: Nevermind, found it: http://www.assembla.com/spaces/fpdb/trac_git_tool

grumpy64, I am working on an installer.
For now you can try this: http://fpdb.****************/docs-install-windows.php
If you take about 30 - 45 minutes of your time and go through that guide without hassle and RESTART your computer after you're done then the fpdb environment should be set up.

All you have to do then is download the actual fpdb (see "Download" on website), unzip it to a folder of your choice and double click the file "fpdb.py".

If you have any problems you can ask here, shoot a PM or email.

And try the trouble shooting guide that Eratosthenes wrote a few posts back. Between the instructions and that guide I was able to get it up and running with only a few hairs pulled out.

Is installation on Vista any different?

I think my problem is here:

31. In the console window now type: mkdir "%homepath%\Application Data\fpdb" and hit ENTER. Copy the file "default.conf" from the docs folder of your fpdb git to the directory C:\%homepath%\Application Data\fpdb\.

I did this, but I can't find the folder; I think Vista's file structure may be different. I tried making a folder in App data and continuing on from there. However when I try to open the fpdb.py a console window opens for a second, then closes with nothing else happening.

I am using XP and I tried doing this instal again and I couldn't find this folder either. "%homepath.." stuff is your user name but for the life of me I can't find that directory. Command line says Application Data\fpdb is there but I can't find this on computer through my computer. Am I suppose to be copying "default.conf" through the command line or something? Blah.

uofi2012 and 2tonbobby,

this is how you should find the fpdb configuration file directory on an English Windows XP:

1. Open "My Computer"
2. Open "C:"
3. Open folder "Documents and Settings"
4. Open folder which resembles your user name
(You are now in the folder %homepath%)
5. Open folder "Application Data"
6. Now you should see the folder fpdb into which the file default.conf should be copied.

Please post if you were able to find the folder with this instructions.

For whatever reason C:\%homepath%\Application Data\fpdb is hidden on my computer. Here is a solution I did to finally get this program up and running for me. First of all in line 31 of the documentation directions it says type %homepath% in the command line. My computer is named Cameron. Did you mean for me to use %homepath% or Cameron in that direction? I used %homepath% and for whatever reason it didn't work or as I more likely suspect the directory is hidden for some reason and I couldn't put the default.conf file in it. So just now I went into command line and wrote

mkdir "Cameron\Application Data\fpdb"

I rebooted my computer and to my surprise inside of
My Computer
C:
Documents and Settings
Cameron
I found another Cameron folder and inside that folder was Application Data. I copied the default.conf file into that folder and edited the password.

***Important Part***
After copying default.conf into Application Data and editing the password, I copied the Application Data folder into the outer Cameron folder (it exist in the inner second Cameron folder). And when I hit copy it told me that Application Data already existed in this outer Cameron folder and did I want to over write it I clicked yes. The computer telling me that Application Data already existed in the outer Cameron foulder but that I couldn't see it is why I think this directory was somehow hidden from my view.

If you get to step 31 but can't find the Application Data folder try these steps.

The program is up and running for me now.

Thanks for posting this. The "Application Data" folder seems to be hidden by default. I got to it by opening my editor, clicking on file open, navigating to the folder above "Application Data", and then typing "Application Data" in the file entry--a return moved me in to the "Application Data" folder, so I could select default.conf for editing. THAT was easy.

Somebody can probably tell us how to unhide it.

Note that there is also an "Application Data" folder in C:\, that is NOT the one where fpdb looks for the default.conf file.

That is basic windows default settings. Every time I do remote support, the first thing I do:

Tools > Folder Options > View Tab >

- Turn ON 'Show Hidden files and folders'
- Turn off 'Hide extensions for known file types'

Please note that "Application Data" is localized; i.e. in German it's "Anwendungsdaten". To get the location in Python you can use os.environ['APPDATA'].
